Dear Dr Stoll,
Ive been searching the web for information on Magnesium, you seem to have a lot of knowlege so I would appreciate your advice ;)
Autumn '99 I was taking a compound called OxCgen to combat candida, it contained 500mg of magnesium oxide per capsule and worked by splitting the magnesium from the oxygen when consumed with water (vitamin C was also included). The packet said you could go up to 15 capsules a day and wanting to get rid of my candida quickly I did. This means I was consuming 7500mg of magnesium oxide a day for a few months. I've since done research and realised that this is WAY over the recomended daily amount. I stopped taking it in December '99 but shortly afterwards following a quite bad dose of flu got quite ill. Some of the symtoms I had correlate with ones I found listed on the net for magnesium overdose, namely low-blood pressure, slow heartbeat, dizzyness, breathing difficulties, drowzyness. Over a year later I'm still not well and Im wondering whether my sypmotoms are caused by the magnesium rather than post flu effects. If that's the case do you know if I have damaged myself for life or if there is anything I can do about it??
Thank you very much for any help
Katie

It is very difficult to overdose on magnesium. Whatever is not absorbed is very effectively eliminated via the kidney's.

Hi, Katie.
Magnesium Oxide is nearly perfectly not absorbable. It is the cheapest form of magnesium and such is a cruel hoax by the manufacturer. Go to any chemistry text and you will see how ridiculous the claim that it "splits the magnesium from the oxygen when consumed with water" is.
You can bet that your symptoms are not due to an "overdose" of magnesium. If you need proof, get an intracellular magnesium level (see the archives).
Let us know what you learn.

The most absorbable form of magnesium is water-soluble magnesium. Go to www.naturalcalm.net and check out a product called NATURAL CALM.

Hi Walt,
Thanks for replying! Well the manufacturer claimed that because the capsules contained vitamin C the environment was acidic enough for the oxygen and magnesium to split up (it was the oxygen that was supposed to attack the candida, the magnesium was just there). If that actually happened would I have absorbed more of the magnesium?
I will try and get an intracellular magnesium test, last time I asked my Doctor they didn't think there was one! I did have a normal electrolyte blood test though and it showed the things they tested for (I think calcium and potasium and a few others)to be normal.
Thanks again!!
Katie

This product supplies magnesium citrate. According to Krispin Sullivan, CN (www.krispin.com), citrate is a inorganic form of magnesium. It will tend to cause diarrhea and is not as absorbable as the Albion chelates.

who is Krispin Sullivan?

She is a clinical nutritionist an interview with whom I heard on Wide World of Health, a radio health related show that is broadcast in Sacramento, CA area.

Just curious. I try to make it a habit not to listen to so-called "experts" without having all the facts. I still believe that water-soluble magnesium is better obsorbed. If you have any contrary proof that you would like to share, I would be very interested in reading it. If some unseen fact arises that dismisses something I have perceieved as fact, I would very much like to be corrected on it.

One source could be an article posted Rosemarie. I don't know if arguments its author uses will meet your requirements, but he gives some comparison of different mineral combinations, including citrates vs glycine chelates. You can read the article at the address below.

Hi, No.
I agree. However magnesium oxide is NOT dissolvable in water.

Hi, Katie.
Magnesium oxide is almost as stable as dihydrogen oxide (water). It does not dissociate in conditions less than a nuclear blast (grin).
Ask your poor ignorant doc to contact Great Smokies Labs and they will help educate him about the availability of thes test and why other tests are not accurate. They can send you the same information.

This source advocates water-soluble minerals. I wonder is Albion chelates are water-soluble. They may be, and, perhaps, that's why they are very absorbable. By the way, this source is where you can buy products from Biotics Research that have been advocated by Dr. Kim on this board and Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com).
