I've been taking magnesium aspartate approx. 800mg/day as an additional supplement along with a vitamin that supplies approx. 200mg/day. I also supplement with copper 4mg/day, garlic, CoQ10 60mg/day with l-carnitine fumarate 340mg/day and fish oil. This was the schedule that my M.D. suggested after my last visit. I had one episode of a-fib approximately a year ago and my cardiologist had put me on digoxin. I had started getting headaches and neck pain that was unexplainable approx. 1 month ago. It was suggested that I stop the digoxin by my M.D. but my cardiologist did not see it the same way. I saw another cardiologist, a little more open-minded to alternative medicine, and he felt that I should stop the digoxin. There was an immediate improvement with my head and neck pain, although not 100%. After experimenting on my own it was not until I stopped the magnesium aspartate that the pain was completely gone. Dr. Stoll your board and book have been extremely helpful to me, is there another form of magnesium that would not cause this reaction? Have you any idea why the magnesium may be causing this? Is it a reaction to any of the other supplements? Thank you for all your help without finding you I do not believe that my problem would have ever been close to being resolved and I believe my health would have suffered from unnecessary medications.

Tony, someone here (don't remember who, but thanks anyway)referenced URL http://www.skyboom.com/newwest and articles written by Dr. Tim O'shea. Since I've never heard of this doctor before, please don't take this as an endorsement; I've only scratched the surface in my own research. But you might find this partial reprint from one of his articles on mineral supplementation worth reading:
"Our only hope of better health is to do everything possible to build up our natural immune system. One of these preventative measures is nutritional supplementation. It may not be dramatic, but daily deposits to the immune system bank account will pay off down the road. Healthy people don’t get sick.
With respect to minerals, then, what are our goals? My opinion is that having once realized the necessity for mineral supplementation, our objectives should be simple:
- Take only the minerals we absolutely need
- Take the smallest amounts possible
- Nothing left over ( no metabolic residue)
...We are living in the age of the Junk Science Hustle. Everybody’s an expert, often quoting shaky sources, shaky facts, and shaky claims which may have no foundation in physical reality." (end quote)

The site seems to rely on a large number of university and private research studies, all referenced in the articles. Whether these studies are less entangled with the big Pharms, I don't know.

Dear Tony,
I think it's possible that you might have an allergy to Mg which is responsible for the symptoms you describe.
According to Dr. Ellen Cutler (founder of "Bio-Set"), when you have a deficiency of Mg it is very common for you to have an allergy to it as well (which will keep your body from being able to utilize it). The allergic symptoms would not necessarily be the same as the symptoms that occur due to an inablity to absorb the mineral through the gut lining, since they are probably mediated elsewhere. I have a Mg deficit and when I tried to take MgAspartate I didn't develop the diarrhea (which I did when I had taken MgOxide) which is a clear sign that the Mg is passing right through your system. I developed an exacerbation of the symptoms that I had been having related to bracing.
Kinesiological testing showed that I had an allergy to Mg, and it was linked to a number of systems (cardiovascular, extrapyramidal, immune, skeletal). I received a NAET treatment (Nambudripan Allergy Elimination Technique) for the allergy, and so far it's holding. I'm taking MgAspartate without a problem. And the desensitization method can be repeated, and this is sometimes necessary, but eventually, it will hold. NAET is an energy based technique and it is my experience, and the experience of others whom I know, that it is a very effective method for dealing with allergies. Dr. Ellen Cutler has, in my opinion, improved upon Dr. Nambudripan's method with "Bio-Set". Dr. Cutler has just published a new book, "The Food Allergy Cure", in which she clearly describes how to do the whole energy based treatment protocol yourself. This is extremely self-empowering. There are two older books by Dr. Cuter, "Winning the War against Asthma and Allergies" and "Winning the War against Immune system disorders" which are also excellent. However, since writing those books, she has continued to do a lot of research, including integrating Dr. Peter D'Adamo's blood type work into her work, and has made some changes to her original protocol. She now first tests each person's blood to see if they are allergic to it, and if so, then clears that allergy first. A blood vial (whether there was an allergy present to blood or not) is then combined with every other allergen that is tested and treated. You can make your own blood vial, or you can buy universal homeopathic blood vials. All the info for doing this is in her new book. Dr. Cutler's website is at www.bioset-institute.com. There is a list of Bio-Set practitioners there, if you don't want to try to treat yourself.
I just want to add that removing allergens in this way is just one more way to lessen the stress load you're carrying while you're doing everything else Dr. Stoll advocates, most importantly, the deeper work of SR.
I wish you well,
Cindy

Hi, Tony.
Since magnesium cannot cause your symptoms, it must be the aspartate. Try glycinate or orotate. Besides, the dose you are taking is too small to give you best results. You need at least a gram of elemental magnesium twice a day to get there (if you are absorbing the magnesium well enough). If not, you need the IV magnesium (at least 2 grams of elemental megnesium 2-3 times a week for a few weeks) until you CAN absorb it orally.
Remember that the signals from the altered hypothalamus (stored stress-effect) have to be a part of the problem. SO, how are you doing with your SR?
Let us know how you do.
Namaste`
