My husband and I were participants in a double blind study using Mag Sulfate injections. We were given 1 gram twice a week for six weeks. At the end of four weeks I knew that I was receiving the magnesium and he placebo. That proved correct at the end of the study.
How could I tell I was getting the magnesium? Initially our levels were so low that each injection would leave me feeling ill...on the side of the body where the injection was given. I had feverish sensations, aches and increased pain. That happened for four weeks. Suddenly after that point I began to have less pain and more energy. Muscle cramps diminished and basically disappeared. Other symptoms also improved. We had taken contaminated, or genetically engineered L-tryptophan and diagnosed with eosinophilia myaglia syndrome which had FMS-like symtoms, MS-like symptoms to include facial symtpoms and drops etc, and CFS-like symptoms with the EMS syndrome. A lot of other problems as well. The initial relief was in pain and cramps and fatigue lifted. I believe that cognitive functions also improved as sleep cycles improved. I would be happy to dialogue if anyone is interested please email me. We have been taking the injections since 1993, admittedly we don't take them consistently...but as soon as symptoms begin to reappear we begin the injections again. Our physician used me in the process of developing a special tool for the MRI so they could watch the results of muscle exertion on people with this condition. And we were hospitalized for massive mag infusions, and carried bottles for 24 hours catching all urine. It was quite a study and the results have enabled us to manage symptoms that otherwise are debilitating. I expect to continue the rest of our lives. We used to have monthly, then quarterly tests to determine whether toxicity was a risk. It never manifested. Perhaps if we did take 1 gram twice weekly over years that would be different, but monitoring with blood level tests periodically seems a good failsafe.

Thanks,M.
Isn't it amazing that the dramatic results of correcting your magnesium deficiencies are almost totally unknown among practicing physicians?
