Magnesium - I'm confused now...

Posted by beth on August 28, 2001 at 19:32:04:

I've been taking magnesium oxide for 3 years now, it really helps keep me regular. But I've been reading on the list here about liquid magnesium (Natural Calm - which is magnesium citrate) and NOW's magnesium citrate powder. When going through the archives, Dr. Stoll says Magnesium Glycinate is the most easily absorbed, and he says magnesium citrate is poorly absorbed. And in my search for more information, I found out that magnesium ascorbate has the highest elemental magnesium by volume.

I am totally confused now. Dr. Stoll, what brand of magnesium would you have recommended to your patients? Anybody else want to address this? I just want to take something that will help my muscles (I have FMS). Thanks.

Beth, if you have read any of the archives you probably found Dr. Stoll recommends an intra-venous solution of magnesium exactly for the reasons you mentioned....it is so hard to absorb magnesium. This way, it goes immediately into the bloodstream. If you want to try to get an M.D. to do it, you will probably have to have a bloodtest proving you need it first. Being hard to absorb, it makes a very good laxative. I had read about magnesium malate but it has a lot more malic acid (comes from apples) than magnesium and the acid gives me restless legs. I think the glycinate is your best bet. But you could check out the malate, it is specifically for muscles.

I have interstitial cystitis, and malic acid irritates my bladder. I just want to make sure I'm actually getting some magnesium into my system. I'm currently unemployed and visiting a holistic Dr. is not in my budget. If I could find one who took insurance, I would give it a try, but I haven't found one yet.

Hi, Beth.

First, the real cost of illness is NOT the money it costs. Think about it.

Already in 1900 there were more visits to alternative practitioners than to conventional docs. Most of these visits were not covered by insurance.

In other words people were voting with their dollars; saying they preferred to pay for something that worked than get something that did not for free. This ratio has continued to increase since then. See the NEJM article in January 1993.

For the problem you are describing, I would take magnesium glycinate. If your intracellular level is low enough you will have to get it built up via IV treatments of at least 2 grams of elemental magnesium per dose a few times a week for a few weeks so that you will start absorbing it orally better.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
