Dr. Stoll,
I have had a variety of symptoms related to low Mg - including insomina, heart palpatations, hypoglycemia, COLD extremities, asthma like breathing problems, terrible headaches, muscle twitches, tingling in extremities, lightheadness and dizziness, etc. In reading work by Dr. Seeling, I feel like a "poster child" for low Mg. Initially, I was given oral Mg (liquid MgCl) and I did OK with this for awhile (about 1 yr). After this first year, I got loose stools/diarrhea from taking Mg. I still have the low Mg symptoms, but for the past 3 years, cannot seem to tolerate Mg supplements without getting diarrhea - I've tried chelated Mg taurate, Mg glycinate, and of course different forms of MgCl - no apparent difference in my gut tolerance.
My new doc. ran an RBC Mg and this was "normal" - this was about 1 yr ago. She recently found an intracellular test for Mg and a few other minerals - in this test, they scrape sublingual cells and evaluate these. My Mg levels were (not surprisingly) low. My doc. has prescribed Mg via IV - 6 of these once per week for the next 6 weeks. I had my 1st one today.
The entire treatment included an injection of B-vitamins as well as the IV - called a Meyers (sp?) cocktail. What is in "Meyers cocktail?" Will 6 of these IV be sufficient? I've read about folks who need the Mg IV for much, much longer than this - so I'm trying to learn all that I can. From my search of your archives, it seems that I should expect to improve my Mg absorption with these IV - true? What other things should I expect?? My first one was today, and I had to come home and take a 2 hr. nap afterwards - is this unusual? Other than that, I don't notice any differences.
By the way, the archives seemed to include some debate about some genetic reason for higher than normal Mg needs. My entire family seems to exhibit varying degrees of low Mg symptoms - my symptoms may be worst. However, I have a brother who is quickly heading for a diagnosis of "chronic fatigue." I fully believe that there must be very large genetic differences in Mg needs across the human population. Our US Vice President, Mr. Cheney, probably has LOW cellular levels of Mg - what do you think?
Many thanks for your reply!

Hi,
Can you give the name and lab for the mineral test or a web site?
I wish you well,
Olive

Sorry, but I don't know. My doc. ordered the test. Apparently, she is one of a few docs. who are trying this newer test.
You may search the web for keywords like, "intracellular minerals test" or maybe even "sublingual."
My doc. is a close colleague of Dr. Zava who started the ZRT lab (does saliva hormone testing). Maybe those folks introduced the minerals test? (Their web site address is: http://www.salivatest.com/) Or, maybe those folks could direct you to the lab who runs the intracellular minerals test?
Good luck to you.

Doc,
I also find that I cannot take ANY calcium supplements, and I must avoid milk, yogurt, kefir, cheese, even tahini, etc. - otherwise the very, very low Mg symptoms are unbearable. This, despite the fact that I keep trying to take oral Mg (I've never been able to get as high as you recommend - 2 g of Mg glycinate - without getting diarrhea which makes my symptoms even worse. I can't seem to get much above 800 mg of Mg daily before the loose stool problem sets in.)
Why won't my body normalize its minerals? Should I avoid Ca while I try to replete Mg?? For how long? What should I do?
Again, thank you.

Hi, Marj.
I agree with you about Mr Cheny.
"Myer's Magic" is a worth while formula. However, with someone genetically needing more Mg than most people the Mg content is much too low to give more than temporary relief.
I would talk to the doc who knows enough to use Myer's Magic to give you 2 grams of elemental Mg IV about 3 times a week for 2 weeks. THEN, I will bet that your GI problems with Oral Mg will stop especially if you use something like the glycinate.
Let us know how you do.
Walt

Hi, Marj.
One of the reasons for the IV magnesium route is to bypass the GI tract. Once your magnesium level is closer to normal you will be able to better tolerate oral magnesium and will not need such a high dose.
Even though magnesium and calcium work together in many ways, I would try only one at a time to begin to find out which works and at what dose they make a difference. Later you can try to combine them and learn how much of each you need together.
Remember that green, leafy vegetables are great sources of both Ca & Mg.
Hope this helps.
Walt
