Just returned from my cardiolist, he did some blood work and tells me my magnesium level is low, actual said I must be loosing magnesium, put me on mag tablets for a month also sent me back to lab for thyroid blood work.
I don't completetly understand the importance of magesium. I do know you must have magnesium. and if I losing it where is it going. I',m not on a diet or taking diuetrics , have been on calcium channel block meds for some time, also on Prilosec. any info would be helpful

Dear Sharon,
How was your magnesium checked? A serum magnesium is worse than worthless. It must be an intracellular magnesium. If an intracellular magnesium WAS checked, you are likely low enought that you will not absorb magnesium efficiently orally & will need at least a gram of ELEMENTAL magnesium IV 3 times a week for a couple of weeks to get your level up enough that you can begin to absorb it efficiently.
Also, it is a LOT more likely that your magnesium is low because it is not found in refined foods AND you are not absorbing well what you DO take in. I was taught 40 years ago about diuretics losing magnesium, etc. If the doc has learned nothing for the last 40 years, THAT is what s/he will focus on.
You will need someone knowledgable enough to do the IV magnesium and to put you on the digestive enzymes needed to absorb any orally. I hope your cardiologist at least knew enough to order an intracellular magnesium AND to put you on the easiest form for absorbtion. Orotate, aspartate & glycinate are the easiest forms I know of.
Just 15 years ago I was called a quack for even testing my patients for magnesium. I am glad to hear that, finally, at least some docs are thinking about it.
If you need help finding professionals who would know how to do this, write again here on the BB.
Walt
I'm doing an assignment at school and I would like to find general information about Magnesium oxide, about its chemical properties and everyday uses.
I'll appeciate it if you sent it as soon as possible, as this assignment is due in very soon.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Walt:
Thanks for the reply, the test seem to be a simple blood test for mag. level, I will be speaking to dr. again soon, waiting also for thyroid results. I will mentioned what you have said, and find out what his reaction to this is. Usually if there is a problem other than cardiac he refers me to a specialist. Just waiting for more results before going back to speak to him. I will keep you posted.
Thanks again sharon

Hi Walt:
Called drs. office to see if thyroid results we in yet, nurse said not yet but went over my other blood work, said it shown alot of abnormal markings, but she said they were only one point different if high was 20 I had 21 if low was 10 I had 9, so she want to have the blood work done again, they were checking electrolites and other goodies that go with it I told her I'll be back in when they get results from my thyroid test. I had these done at a local hospital. She wants me to have the next set down in the drs office.
Keep you posted. Sharon

Dear Serena,
Since magnesium oxide is not assimilatable by the body, it has no medical use.

I need to know what is
the normal level of magnesium
in the human body?

Dear Adrian,
As with nearly all laboratory results, that differs from laboratory to laboratory. What is important is not the level "in the body" but the level INSIDE the cell. That determination is only accurately done by labs (few) that do this determination every day (many times a day). That is why I have emphasized this so many times on this BB & referenced these labs in the back of my book.
Not only does one need a competent lab but the physician that would know how to order it from that competent lab AND what to do about the results. You can learn all that by calling (800) 234-6825. Let us know what you learn.
