magnesium paradox?

Posted by Tim Zuffi on May 27, 1998 at 19:01:04:

If the active ingredient in laxatives like milk of magnesia is divalent magnesium, then how will taking magnesium for e.g. fibromyalgia ever be effective? Won't you just be giving yourself a laxative? I ask this because, as far as I can tell, this is what is happening to me. Every time I try to take anything containing 200mg of magnesium or higher, I just get a case of mild diarrhea. Is this what you mean by difficult absorption?

Dear Tim,

When magnesium is not absorbed, it causes a laxative effect. Milk of Magnesia is a great example. This type of magnesium is not absorbable by anyone SO, it causes a laxative effect.

If magnesium orotate, aspartate or glycinate cause you the same effect, you need a series of IV magnesium--about 2 grams of elemental magnesium at a sitting 3 times a week for 2 weeks AND a definite progrem to get rid of your LGS.
I have never, yet, seen a case of FMS be resolved with oral magnesium alone. ALL cases I have seen also have LGS and absorb it poorly.

Also, remember, even when the FMS symptoms clear with magnesium, they wil recurr unless the bracing is eliminated and the LGS is corrrected.
