How good/bad is yogurt?

Posted by maryann on November 05, 2002 at 09:25:13:

I gave up dairy a while back, but lately have read that yogurt is good for menopausal women. So I added Stonyfield Organic non-fat yogurt to my diet. Am I making a mistake? I read Robert cohen's info on notmilk.com but still am on the fence. Any advice? thanks, maryann

Robert Cohen is only half right. Reading and taking his advice would be similar to me telling you not to eat vegetables because of pesticides and herbicides. That would be silly. Simply get organic vegetables, and the problem is solved. Well, in regards to milk, here is the meat and potatoes of it. Pastuerization and homogenization are the main problems with milk but there are others. Hormones, antibiotics, BrGH, and other contaminants. These are ONLY a problem when milk is obtained from conventional sources like your grocery store. However, RAW organic milk that has not been pastuerized, homogenized, and free of contaminants is quite healthy and has been consumed for thousands of years with benefit. Even better than raw milk, is raw yogurt. The fermentation process makes all of the nutrients in the milk more available to the body. If you can get goat milk instead of cows milk, that's even better. Goat milk is better asborbed and is very similar to human breast milk.

This type of agenda against healthy traditional foods like raw milk, red meat, and fats like coconut oil really frustrates me. How many times have we been told to eliminate red meat because it causes cancer and heart disease? It's ridiculous. It's the CHARRING and BURNING of meat that causes these compounds to flourish. Therefore, eating rare meat poses no problems, especially if from organic sources. This is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There is no reason to do it. We are also told not to eat red meat because of the hormones and antibiotics. Again, all we need to do is buy organic from a reputable source. Grass-Fed beef would be even better due to the higher omega-3's and lower omega-6's. I challenged some of Robert Cohen's views in an email months ago. He never responded.

P.S - some people are allergic to the casein in cows milk. Goat milk has very little casein. Also, some people cannot digest the lactose. Again, making yogurt solves this problem.

It depends

I've been on & off dairy many times in the last 3 years. I quit it again 2 weeks ago. My digestion improved 2 days later. I'm a blood type O+. Dairy is hard for Os to digest. I really think i'm better off without dairy. ER4YT helps my digestion. Listen to your body....taz

Very good info on milk by Hy; You definetly need to tune into your body and at different times you might be on it less or more, or off totally, according to what your body might need at the time; [ i get off periodically and then i can handle it again and even feel it is very helpful; If you get to much mucus in your body then you might have to watch it; Everyone is an individual and one theory is not right for everyone;
I eat yogurt about every other day and we make fruit mango [we grow, and have frozen year around] drinks with it and sometimes put egg white protein powder in with it, delicious breakfast; We make our own yogurt and add extra culture to it called Symbiotics or extra acidophillus to it when making with the starter; We use organic milk [although it is not raw] we get in the regular grocrey store; [cheepest at wallmart];
I do find that the one you make yourself seems to deal better with people then even the health food brands; It is easy to make; Today we just found a source of goat milk raw, so that is great, well try it next;

To add to what others said, make sure when you find a good yogurt or milk to yogurt from that it is NOT fat-free or low-fat. Fat is good. Don't go for adulterated food!
