Chalk one more up for the bad guys. The Government, who subsidises all
these huge Agro-businesses, isn't going to let a little thing like consumer
sentimet stop them from raming GMO's down our throats, quite literally.

FDA Warns Milk Manufacturers On Hormone Labels
9-18-3

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on
Friday told four companies which make milk and ice cream to stop
labeling their products as free of hormones.

No milk product can truthfully be labeled hormone free, the agency
said, because all milk contains naturally occurring hormones.

"FDA is committed to assuring that consumers are provided with
truthful information on product labels," FDA Commissioner Dr. Mark
McClellan said in a statement.

"FDA will continue to take strong action to protect American
consumers from products with labeling that is false or misleading."

The agency said the makers may have wanted to say their products
were free of an engineered hormone called recombinant bovine
somatotropin or rbST, which is used to increase milk production.

"Before the 1993 approval of rbST, FDA determined that the
recombinant, or genetically engineered form of bST is virtually
identical to a cow's natural somatotropin, a hormone produced in the
pituitary gland that stimulates the production of milk," the agency
said.

Because the products are virtually identical, the FDA said there was
no need to label milk that contains the genetically engineered form.

"Producers have no basis for claiming that milk from cows not
treated with rbST is safer than milk from rbST-treated cows," the
FDA added.

why Can't they say that they Don't add hormones for the
people that want to avoid them ?? I am not as fussy as
most and let my body decide but if something didn't agree
I might know why. Of course probably many things don't
cause an obvious or immediate problem but if they did then
people would know why. Seems like one has to be sensitive
to any upsets or different tastes and use that as a guide
though it probably won't be accurate. I avoid eating out
at any place where i have the slightest proble and with
my hounds who I feed Anything they bug me for, I Don't
feed them anything that causes any upsets, even gas.

Hi, Vince.

It is because the Dairy Lobby is one of the most powerful inWashington. They have alkways been exenpt from the requirement to put ingredients in any dairy product on the lable.

A few years ago Ben & Jerry's began putting on their ice cream that their product did not have any artificial hormones in it. The FDA forced them to remove the information because: "People might get the idea that hormones in milk might be dangerous."

Go figure. All the current reserarch says that the added growth hormones are increasing the incidence of prostate cancer and breast cancer. Yet the lobby prevents the consumer from getting that information.
