RAW milk... anybody recommend it?

Posted by Grace [4800.74] on March 16, 2006 at 19:41:43:

Hi,
I have a friend who drinks only raw milk.. specifically raw goats milk. I don't know if I want to drink goats milk, but am willing to try raw cow's milk (for myself and for the kids). However, I wanted to know what you all think about that. It isn't pasteurized or homogenized. I always thought that if you don't pasteurize it, there is harmful bacteria in it that could be dangerous to you. Is this true? Are there any other drawbacks to drinking raw milk (or any raw dairy product like cheese or yogurt)???

Grace

Yes, I definately recommend it, I drink it myself and can feel (and taste) the difference, the enzymes make it so much easier to digest, and there is more nutrition since pasteurization destroys some nutrients, and even the nutrients not destroyed by pasteurization are often harder to absorb in pasteurized milk due to lack of enzymes. I know from personal experience if I have a glass of pasteurized milk it puts such a strain on on my digestion which raw milk doesn't. The concerns about disease from raw milk is way overstated by the dairy industry to scare pwople into supporting pasteurization laws, thus inserting a middleman and preventing farmers from selling direct. It's true that milk from unhealthy cows or produced in unhealthy ways can nake you sick, but then so can any food if mishandled, remember the big food poisoning outbreak traced to green onions, and there have been plenty of disease outbreaks from pasteurized milk too.

Milk from healthy cows will actually neutralize harmful bacteria, they did an experiment with a raw milk dairy in California that is organic and pasture fed, they put large amounts of salmonella and e coli into glasses of the milk, and the next day they could find no trace of them, the good bacteria in the milk had neutralized them, that sure wouldn't happen with pasteurized milk.

See the website www.realmilk.com for more info, including local sources and regulations. Also I'd highly recommend the book "The Untold Story of Milk" by Ron Schmid, all the info on raw milk (and milk in general) you need to know is in that book.

Mad Cow's Disease?

Sort of off topic, but this milk topic got me thinking. If a cow is infected w/mad cow's disease, is the milk infected too???

Thanks for the information... I think I'll give raw milk a shot then. My son loves chocolate milk and I'd much rather give him raw chocolate milk than the pastuerized stuff.

They have raw chocolate milk too? Jeez... I can't even get regular raw milk here in Georgia.

I thought that mad cow disease only affects nervous tissue, such as that found in the brain and spinal column. So unless you're eating these parts of the the cow, I think you're safe. Some people love cow's brain... I think I'll pass...

No, I would buy the raw cow's milk and just find some organic chocolate syrup to mix it in =)

And actually, I have to buy the raw milk from an amish farm in PA.. they deliver their food to houses in the surrounding states and I would pick it up. It's a process, but very worthwhile!

I'm not sure about this.. I think that if the cow is affected, then the entire cow is not safe to eat anymore. ANybody know?

I'm pretty sure that Mad Cow is not in milk. It's in the brain and/or spinal fluid (if a cow is infected).

Good post.

If I could get raw milk where I am now I'd be buying it and drinking it. I used to get it in NH and I enjoyed it when I did. I drank it plain and made my own kefir and yogurt with it, which was the best I've ever had in my life. :-)

NO one has ever been able to prove that the BSE or mad cow disease will be able to be transmitted to another animal. Many theories indicate that the prions are damaged by external/environmental stimulus to become a TSE prion, and then replicate in the tissues. Some examples: copper in insecticide was toxic to sheep,,, jet pathways(sound waves) were over all the cases of BSE and CJ(human) disease in the last epidemic. And all those wild deer in the mid west who are affected never ate another cow, or contaminated food.

Just find a chocolate cow :-) Or maybe one that's fed cocoa?

I get raw milk from an Amish farm about 45 minutes from my house. I lost my taste for milk a long time ago (lactose intolerant), so I just use it for making homemade yogurt--SO good. I've also made the yogurt from organic whole milk and can definitely tell the difference--that from raw is better tasting.

It's not only the pasteurization that "harms" the quality of milk, it's also the homogenization of it. I forgot what it is about it, but something to do with the structure of the fat molecule maybe???

Enjoy your raw milk......

"The transmissible agents that cause the disease in both cattle and humans are “prions.” Prions are not like bacteria or viruses that cause other infectious diseases; rather, they are infectious proteins.

Diseased prions are found in the brain, spinal cord, eye (in the retina), and other tissues of the nervous system of affected animals or humans. In addition, prions can be found outside the nervous system including the bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes. Low levels of prions may also be found in blood."

My husband and I love Raw Goat Milk and feel blessed to be able to even get it; It is like an underground source-ha! [just know someone];
Trusting it-well we would rather trust this Goat Milk then never really knowing what the food and drink association is going to do next to our food;
Dr. Bernard Jensen really beleived in it and i know he lived a long life and drank raw goat milk and raised his own goats;
[You might intuitively feel this out each time, for i'm sure it depends on where one purchases the milk also]; Amish-wow sounds clean to me, now can i feel it each time and smell it ect-this is intuition and I know I can forget to use it;

Could I ask you if you get that locally, or from New Orleans? ;>)
