Substitue for Dairy

Posted by jbry [5342.4631] on October 16, 2008 at 16:24:38:

I would like to give up dairy ... but now with all being said negatively about soy, soy milk doesn't seem like an acceptable substitute. What about rice milk? Any suggestions or what do any others use? Thanks. jbry

Try oatmilk. I found I like oat milk over rice milk. I use (P*cific brand)oat milk on my oatmeal & when "milk" is called for in recipes. Almond milk is also manufactured by the same company.

Hi jbry,

I alternate milks. Sometimes soy, sometimes rice (although unfortunately there is no whole rice milk being manufactured) and sometimes whole raw cow's milk. You do not have to always drink the same kind of milk!

Best wishes,
Jan

I like Goat milk,it's more expensive than some others but it is really creamy and delicious. You can also buy lowfat if you want. It is very easy to digest and better for you than cows milk. Do a search on line and see all the good things about Goats milk. I love it.

Philly,

How would you describe the taste of hemp milk?
Do you have to worry about testing positive on a drug test after consuming hemp products? Poppy seed can trigger a false positive, so I was just wondering.

Fork:

Hemp milk tastes a little nutty. There was a good brand at Whole Foods (forgot the name) but I can't find it now. The other brand they sell, which I tried once, was a little bit too watery and thin.

I suppose if I had to take a drug test I wouldn't drink hemp milk for weeks. Actually, I don't drink it now because I can't find that good brand anymore.

most non-soy non-dairy milks are high carb, low protein- not a good choice. I make walnut milk at home. I put one cup raw walnuts and 4 cups water in the blender and blend it on high. I strain out the solids-you can add them to other food like burgers, meatloaf, pancake batter- and, to the liquid, add 1/4 tsp sea salt and 1 1/2 tbsp of honey or agave. Refrigerate-it tastes better cold.

Hi, jbry.

I was born and raised on a big dairy farm so whole, unpastuerized, unhomogenized milk was a big part of my diet for the first 18 years of my life. Then I went away to college and the habit continued but the milk was, from then on, pastuerized and homogenized. 10 years after I started my medical practice I began to learn about diet and began using a lot less dairy (still used lots of cheese). I have no doubt that my father would have "rolled over in his grave" if he had known that.

I never missed milk (or milk substitutes)in my diet. In my opinion, "milk" is much more of a habit than anything else. It is not a healthy part of anyone's diet other than healthy for the dairyman's pocketbook!

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thank you, Dr. Walt.

I too was raised on a farm with the raw milk and cream. It all seemed good at the time.

I will try some of the suggestions.

Wow, Sounder.

I've been looking at the soymilk makers in the Oriental grocery stores for a long time. You can only make soymilk in them, so this machine seems revolutionary and wonderful. I'm considering buying one.... I love homemade milks but am too "lazy" to make them. The price is so high, but it would only take 90 liters of milk to pay back the machine. Interesting..... thanks so much for the link. I'd love to know if anyone has used the machine on this BB.

Best wishes,
Jan

Hey Sounder,

Here's another soymilk machine that costs a lot less and may be even better....

Hey Jan,

Looks pretty cool.

I do have a question though. The machines must leave some sort of sludge. I mean, they can't completely liquify can they? I don't know anyone who uses them. I guess I assumed that the rice milk I used to get was strained at the end. So that eliminates the whole foods thing, no? Am I off base?

Hi Sounder,

My understanding is the leftover is just the fiber, not the nutrition, from the rice or beans. So rice or soy milk would still be okay on the diet (unless you happened to react to it).

Best wishes,
Jan
