Hair Loss After Going Dairy-Free Low Carb

Posted by Danielle on July 16, 2001 at 19:39:18:

I am a 37 year old female and have had terrific weight loss success on a low-carb, dairy free diet. I eat fish, sardines, grass-fed meat, eggs, ostrich, organic poultry, lots of non-starch vegetables and 1 small serving of berries per day. Beverages are green tea and lots of water. I feel great, my lipid profile has improved dramatically and my thyroid function and hormone levels are excellent. I lost 23 pounds over a 6 month period and have 5 more to lose to reach my goal weight. The problem is that I have been shedding huge amounts of hair. I take lots of vitamins and efa's. The problem started about 3 months into this regime. Any thoughts? The only mineral I could be low in is calcium because I cut out dairy, but I do supplement and eat lots of canned sardines, kale, brocolli. My cellulite has improved tremendously since omitting the dairy. Help -- I do not want to abandon this way of eating, but I also do not want to go bald!!!.

Hi Danielle,
You can have hair loss after major diet changes. Usually after the body gets adjusted, the hair loss will stop. But, it is pretty scarey when you see all that hair in the brush.

Barb is right. 3 months into the diet change is perfect timing for the shedding to start. The growing, resting, and shedding phases of your hair have just shifted. It will stop.

I hope you are right -- I am just sick with worry over this. I've been shedding so heavily for 4 months and I just pray this will stop soon. It is so discouraging to try to do everything right nutritionally to help my body only to have this awful side effect. I eat plenty of fish, lean organic grass fed meats -- so I know I'm not protein deficient (hair is made of protein). Any other thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.

I know it seems like so much is falling out. The same thing happened to me after I was very ill. It can happen with any kind of shock to your body. Change in diet, illness, drugs, childbirth. My hair didn't noticeably thin and it just suddenly stopped.

Since the hair phases changed, the ones that are shedding are actually being pushed out by new ones growing in.

It's called Telogen Effluvium.

I went on Atkins (low carb, no dairy) and was successful on it. After 3 months on the diet, I too began losing HUGE amounts of hair. I went to 3 different docs, and finally saw a dermotologist who told me I had "telogen effluvium" (I may have spelled that wrong). It was caused by the change in my diet 3 months earlier. It stopped after 3 months, although the doc told me it may last for up to 6 months. Try taking biotin and/or prenatal vitamins, do NOT brush your hair if you can help it (my hair is curly and I wore it up every day, so I got away with it). It WILL stop, BUT... and I hate to tell you this, after my hair loss stopped, I tried to resume the diet. Within 3 or 4 weeks, the hair loss started again, stopping when I stopped the diet. I checked the Atkins web site, and apparently this is a side affect mainly for women.... doesn't it figure??? If you're within 5 pounds of your weightloss goal, why not modify your diet and up your excerise? Maybe that will help... But, the hair loss WILL stop!!!!!!!!!!!
