Hi,
Thank you first of all Dr. Stoll for all the information and taking the time to do this. I think this is a great site. I read your article on MVP but i do have one question. I was wondering if i was diagnosed with MVP by and echocardiogram then does that mean i have it or not? I know a couple of ppl that were diagnosed with it and then had another echo and did not have it....strange. Both these ppl were experiencing great deal of anxiety and stress. I find this odd and wonder if i went back to have another would it even show up. My drs said it was very mild and slight and nothing to worry about. Except take antibiotics before surgery. I was diagnosed with this about 2 years ago when i was first starting my bout with MAJOR panic attacks and anxiety depression. I find it out i was not diagnosed with this sooner than at age 23. I am know 25. I was told by my drs that the mvp had nothing to do with my anxiety, etc. I have been on zoloft for 9 months now and i am a great deal better. I could not even leave the house at one time my anxiety was soooo bad and on top of that telling me i had the MVP just made matters worse. So i guess what my question is could stress and anxiety cause a echo to show a MVP? If i got rid of the stress and major anxiety would the echo show no MVP? thanks

Hi, Lynsy.
In my opinion the doc who said to use antibiotics before surgery, because of the MVP, should be sued for malpractice. Every research paper on the subject, for the past 20 years, has shown that even for real valvular lesions (of which MVP is not even one) that antibiotics are not prophylactic in this situation.
It has also been shown that if one goes down the street and does an echocardiogram on passerbys, with or without symptoms, that the exact same % will show MVP. It is a normal varient that only shows up in people with enough anxiety to allow themselves to be tested!
It is time to get at what really is causing your symptoms and forget about the ersatz MVP.
Hope this helps.
Walt
