MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE AND AMOXICILLAN BEFORE DENTAL CLEANING

Dr. Stoll,
First I would like to thank you for answering my questions about cortisone. I became familiar with the terrible side effects of that steroid when I had the reactions. Needless to say, I will NEVER do it again.

My next question is this: My dentist wants me to take Amoxicillan prior to a routine cleaning to avoid Bacterial Endocarditis. I have never taken antibiotics before going to the dentist in my 21.5 years of life. 1) Do I REALLY need to take it? I mean, I know it is preventative but I HATE taken oral meds. 2) After this cortisone experience I am totally freaked out about EVERYTHING, I know longer feel like I know my body like I thought I did. My cardiologist said if I have not taken them before I don't really need to now. But another cardiologist who reviewed my echocardiogram, whom I have never met, who practices at the same hospital, says I do. WHAT DO I DO?

I know Dr. Stoll usually does not recommend taking antibiotics before dental work. If you check the archives, you may locate his thoughts on it. Is there is something special about your condition other than the stated mitral valve proplapse?

I also wonder about the NEED to get cleaning done so often as the RULES seem to say. Maybe you can get this cleaning done in another ten years or so.

My MVP is "slight", with "no regurgitaion". And the only reason I found out about was due to a bad reaction to cortisone I recently had that caused my heart rate to increase. If not for the cortisone, I may not have known about the MVP. I have no other heart conditions as far as I know.

Of course there is a need to get teeth cleaned...

no matter how much one brushes, flosses, rinses with anti cavity liquid, no one ever realized how much "crud" can get under the gum line which in turn causes decay, periodontal disease, not to mention tooth loss. The thought of not getting my teeth cleaned makes me gross out!

If you don't eat sugars or starchy foods the problems with crud under the gum line doesn't come into the equation. And you don't get a build up of plaque on your teeth either. So a daily brush with baking soda is all one needs - if that.

My own veiw on taking precautionary antibiotics with Mitral valve prolapse is obscene. They do the same to AF patients in the US, but not in many areas of the UK. As far as I know it is not practiced for mitral valve prolapse either in the UK. This practice has started because of the blame culture. We give them the right to take responsability for our health. That responsability should lie with us. We know our bodies better.

Antibiotics is from the Greek and means anti life. They always have long term problems, even if they are only subclinical to begin with. I would only consider taking an antibiotic if my life was in iminent danger and they would bring me a bit more time.

Angela

I have talked with people who have had MVP. Later scans have shown it to have righted itself. I am of the opinion that many chemicals and life style issues cause this to happen from time to time. If the underlying problem is addressed (in your case perhaps the cortisone) then it may only have been a blip..... and you may not have it anymore.

Since you found your condition by accident, think of all the people who probably have it also and never are told to take antibiotics. I wouldn't worry about it, my son has had no ramifications after dental work without antibiotics.

1993 thru 1996, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, MVP(diagnosed thru ultra sound), asthma, High Blood pressure( that would fall to practically nothing without warning, and numerous other problems, that would cause my heart to beat irractically, either extremely slow or fast, with many missed / skipped beats etc...
I noticed that ALL physical symptoms were especially worse after eating lunch meats, bacon or other packaged foods.. so I began eliminating them from my diet(foods with MSG, added nitrates, sulfites and especially sodium benzoate) since then.. there is no physical evidence that I have MVP(ultasounds are fine) no asthma, BP is great etc...the pharmacy that I had to carry had been reduced to my vitamins and minerals an the occassional Tums(a craving, not for heart burn)

Went for a cleaning for first time in many years, the Dentist asked if I had taken my prophalatic antibiotics for the MVP, I told him the tale of the vanishing MVP, and told him I would sign a statement if he wanted advising him that it was my choice to have the cleaning without antibiotics.. he did not insist on the statement and proceeded with the cleaning. NOW, if he had dared come near me with novicaine, them he would have needed dental work for himself, as I have found that I have a severe reaction to the epinepherine used in the novacaine as a preservative and to extend the life of the anesthetic effect......It produces the same reaction only 100x worse than the MSG and other preserves!

I actually had a MVP several years ago, diagnosed with an ultrasound, and I was advised to take antibiotics before dental work. Then a couple of years ago I had another ultrasound, and no MVP showed up. The dentist still wants me to take antibiotics or else he won't work on me. So, I just lie and tell him I took them, when I actually don't. (The only problem here is I am forced to buy the presciptions, as he calls them in to the pharmacy)

Donna.

For goodness sake, get a better dentist! If he is this far behind the medical literature what other things might he be behind on as well?!

Even legitimate heart problems no longer require prophylactic antibiotics------------let alone an imaginary condition that has been proven to not exist in you :o(.

Stock in the antibiotic companies?????????
