i was told i was born with this condition, but i've never had symptoms until i began taking over the counter diet pills. since then my life has been little more than trips to the doc for near syncope, shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue.
could diet pills (active ingredient phenylalanine)have something to do with this condition.

Dear wearyheart,
We think that every case of a mitral valve showing the minor prolapse, currently known as MVP (and which I have no hesitancy of calling a FAD diagnosis), IS a congenital variation common in the population. Lots more people have this (At least it can be found on ultra sound exam.) that have no symptoms than those that have symptoms. The fact is that the diagnosis does not cause symptoms but it is a convenient thing to tell the patient so that they finally have a name to put to their many symptoms---and stop bugging the doc about it.
You would be much further ahead to start looking for the cause of your symptoms and do something about them. My book, if read cover to cover, would be a good place to start. THEN, you would be much more canny about how to use this website to learn a lot more.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.
