Mitral Valve Prolapse and Tattoos

I have MVP and want a tattoo. The artists in the area will not tattoo me without a docs note because of the MVP. My doc doesn't like tattoos and will not give me a note. I want to know if this is medically necessary that I not get a tattoo or if its just my doc playing "dad". Thanks.

BB11,

In my opinion, your doc is just being "dad". However, I am more concerened that he still thinks the proven "faux" diagnosis of MVP still has validity. See the home page and the archives about mitral valve prolapse for more information.

Ron,

Hi BB,

How old are you?
What does your "Dad" say about a tattoo?

Who told the tattoo shop about the MVP?
Did they ask specifically about that condition?

Have you not heard the pop song called "Just Like a Tattoo" ?

Ron

Thank you for your response. I told the tattoo shop that I have MVP because I was asked to fill out a form and it specifically asked if I had any heart conditions. Let's just say that I am old enough to make a decision on getting a tattoo, have wanted the same one for 4 years. I obviously do not want to get a tattoo if it will cause a medical condition, but I know several people with MVP that have tattoos and didn't have this problem. The artists I have contacted (2 in my general area) are extremely professional and its one of the reasons to have chosen them. My doc will not say anything other than I do not need a tattoo and he flat out will not give me a note. I think maybe its time I visit another doctor because his response is not good enough for me not to get a tattoo.

BB

Hi BB,

I bet if you gained 10 pounds your MVP would no longer be audible because the heart valve would also put on weight and seal better.

Thin women with too many doctor visits are most likely
the ones who will eventually be told that they have
MVP.

Search the archives here for MVP and print the
applicable article for your doc.

Thanks Ron. My MVP was not diagnosed by listening to my heart with a stethoscope. I have had anxiety and panic disorder most of my life and while discussing this with my doc, he decided to check my heart because of the similarities between MVP and anxiety symptoms. An echo confirmed it. I have also struggled with weight issues and am in no way willing to put on weight just so my doc can't hear my MVP so I can get a tattoo. Besides, I honestly doubt he would change his mind.

I am not sure what you mean by "proven "faux" diagnosis of MVP still has any validity"? I was not told I have MVP based on listening to my heart with a stethoscope. I had an echo done years ago because of the similarities between the anxiety and panic disorder and MVP symptoms. My doc wanted to check my heart to be on the safe side. The echo confirmed MVP. Thanks for your response.

Hi BB,

Maybe another doctor would advise differently?

Probably over 50% of the human popultion has some MVP
if you listen closely enough for it.

Have you looked in the archives for MVP on this site?

BB,

The point is: your structural MVP has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of your symptoms! You could surgically totally replace the leaky valve and your symptoms would continue unabated. This is how the MVP was finally debunked as a clinical entity.

Thanks so much for all your input. Yes, Ron, I have read the posts online. I will see another doc when the opportunity presents itself.
