pre-med for dental work after heart surgery

Posted by Valerie Cardona on February 16, 1999 at 13:15:28:

My husband had unexpected by-pass surgery (quintuple)Nov 10,'98 (it was to have been triple until they 'opened' him). Staff, doctors were really quite nice and helpful. When I queried the cardiologist in charge at the hospital, about pre-medication prior to invasive dental work, he said it was not necessary. When I mentioned that I had to pre-med due to MVP, he said that the 'thinking' in the medical profession had changed regarding that as well. HELP! Should my husband pre-med or not prior to dental work?

Dear Valorie,

Kudos to your doc. About 6 months ago I, once again, put that information on this BB so others might protect themselves from the risky habit of taking antibiotics prior to dental surgery----------expecially in the case of MVP (the FAD diagnosis of the decade).

I am glad to hear that the profession is finally catching up with this BB.

Walt
