Mitral Valve Prolapse and Antibiotics

Posted by Barbara on April 03, 2002 at 11:17:31:

hi there Dr. Stoll -

I have a mitral valve prolapse that is sometimes seen on an ultra sound. I am 50 years old. What do you think about preventive antibiotic therapy when i have to have dental work. Should i take antibiotics every time i have any procedure? ie Sigmoidoscopy and a nose scope seating a crown and or cleaning my teeth.

I find taking antibiotics soooo difficult - unless i take them by IV. When I take antibiotcs IV i seem to be ok with a dose of benydrl IV of 10 milligrams. My doctor does not want me to take antibiotic IV for simple procedures. SHe gave me clinomycin which i had never taken before and told me to take one pill before every procedure. I am sure that she did this because i had a klebsiella blood infection from either a bladder scope or a nasal scope. Should I be so vigilant about this? what is your opinion - and is there anything else I could take besides clindamycin? I did not get a ras from it - but it did bother me. I had to take a shot of benydrl.

thank you
Barbara

I would assume you trust your doctor's advice but why stick with an antibiotic that causes a rash. I take either biaxin or cipro because I am allergic to penicillin. It is a one dosage deal. There is some controversey about this but in my book, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I was diagnosed with MVP in 1987, and I never took any antibiotics for a dental procedure before then. I took them for a few years after the diagnosis but, I have not for the last 7 years and have had no problems. I tend to agree with Dr. Stoll on this in that MVP is a non-existant condition, and the real cause of your symtoms is Dysautonomia or "sensitive nervous system".

If MVP is a "real" condition and you are born with it, how come MVP people are not all ending up with Mitral valve infections? I was 20 by the time I discovered "it" and had been to the dentist for several tooth extractions braces ect. before I knew of MVP. My doc said it usually takes a very physically or emotional experience to bring on the sympoms. I experienced some chest pains and heart flutterings after I was sleep deprived and stressed from "Hell Week" pledging in a fraternity. I have since learned that it was not my heart causing these symptoms but STRESS!!

So in my opinion, you guys are needlessly taking a bunch of antibiotics.

A friend of mine almost died last month from this...

She has had a heart condition since birth (diagnosis MVP). Several months ago her doc declared her healthy, as in no detectable murmur, she had a root canal (no antibiotics), and ended up in the hospital a few days later with an acute infection that settled in her heart. She was hospitalized for over 10 days.

Was there something she could have taken besides antibiotics to prevent the bacteria from spreading?

Are you sure it was Mitral Valve Prolaps? I have never heard of anyone with MVP getting a bacterial infection in the Mitral valve (or heart). People who get Rhumatic fever often get serious Mitral valve problems where they can get the bacterial infections.

Hi, CT.

Your friend had to have had rheumatic mitral valvular disease and NOT the FAD diagnosis of MVP!

Hi, Barbara.

All recent research shows that NO prophylactic antibiotic therapy helps anything. However, that has not stopped the allopathic monopoly (that claims to worship at the altar of science) from refusing to change their practices. This is the Tolstoy Syndrome full blown. Only personal responsibility and knowledge will save us until the MDs get around to changing their minds.

There can be other problems with the Mitral valve that are not caused by Rheumatic fever and are not "MVP". In other words she could have been born with Mitral Stenosis, Mitral Incomptence ect. and it just progressed over time before it was detected. Again, though, I have never heard of ANYONE with MVP getting Bacterial Endocarditis. (and I know of many people who have been diagnosed with this, including myself so, forgive me if I have a hard time with this)

Thanks, CT.

That IS possible but VERY rare.
