Tried removing a mole with garlic....Walt, please read!

Hey Walt,

The other day I was curious about removing moles with a piece of garlic. This was a very very small mole on my arm. Anyways, I tried garlic overnight, and got no results. The next night, I applied hot sauce onto the mole, then put a small piece of garlic over it. The next morning there was this bubble where the mole was. I let it go, and the next morning I popped the bubble. The mole is gone, but now there is a small burn mark. Was this a stupid thing for me to do? Will the mole grow back? Will there be a scar? Please help. Thanks.

Hi, Ken.

The capsiasin in the hot sauce blistered your skin. It is likely, since moles are generated in the very deepest parts fo the skin, that it will come back within about 4 weeks.

I would be hesitant to do this for several reasons: first, if it was a cancer, you now have no pathology report to tell you until it recurrs. Next, if it was NOT a cancer, you have materially pushed it in that direction by irritating it sufficiently to blister the tissue.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

So should I just try to remove my little moles with just a piece of garlic? I read on a web-site( www.pathlights.com/nr_encyclopedia/17canc01.htm) that you need to put it on the mole for 3 days. Should I just try that from now on?

Ken,

I don't know what Walt will say, however, I've had several moles removed by my dermatologist within the past year and a half. He always sends them out to be biopsied and unfortunately a few of them came back changing cells. This required me to go back to my dermatologist to have an extra layer of skin removed, and biopsied as well. Thankfully, these came back finally indicating margins free. (no cancer & won't be growing back)

IMHO, if I were you I wouldn't remove my moles in this manner. My family is very prone to skin cancer as two family members have had skin cancer. One showed his doc this strange mole which suddenly changed colors. Three days later he was in the hospital having the remainder of the extensive under the skin mole removed. He's never had a repeat of this melanoma skin cancer eith.

I'd have no problem removing skin tags, however, moles seem to be a different story. It's your decision, but you might read through the archives on this board while waiting for reply from Walt.

Hey, Ken.

Listen to B.B. She has got it right!

I would be terrified to remove a mole without sending a piece if it to the lab for pathological examination.

Walt
