Does this look like skin cancer ?

Posted by Roy on January 13, 2003 at 23:42:13:

The 2 flat brownish spots near the bottom of the photo have been on my left cheek for several months now (can't recall exactly, ...possibly since summer). They appeared within a few weeks of each other. They started out to be what I thought were pimples, then healed to what is in the pic. They occasionally, though not for a while now, will have some dry skin flake off. Could this be the "big C"?

Thanks, Roy!

Good pictures.

Looks like basal cell cancer to me (the best kind anyone can get). I would have to feel them and I suggest you do the same for your doc. These grow slowly and never metastasize.

Let us know what the biopsy shows.

Walt

Thanks for your reply Walt.

I'm already aware that I have a fairly weak immune system (several colds per year) -- perhaps this is the "2X4" that I need to step up my wellness program.

In addition to what I described in my 1st post, the 2 lesions have a hard and crusty feeling and sensitive (painful) to the touch. I looked up basal cell cancer and it also mentions these characteristics.

I went to my dermatologist last week, for laser treatment of my birthmark near that area (in fact in the pic, you can see some of the lighter areas of it). When I asked her about the 2 spots, she said they were "blebs" (blood-blister like things within the birthmark). I mentioned that they didn't look like blebs, but she said they were. (Blebs are much smaller, red, soft and smooth. These spots were larger, brownish and hard). Unfortunately, she blasted them with the laser anyway so I'm not sure what will happen when everything heals.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks, Roy.

They certainly did not look like blebs to me. Fortunately basal cells are the one exception to never removing lesions without biopsy since they never metastasize. If she made a mistake the worst that can happen is that they will come back and THEN you must insist upon a biopsy.

Walt
