Is Vitamin C really good for the skin?

Posted by rachel [145.83] on August 29, 2004 at 07:53:09:

I've been hearing all this hype from friends in the dermatological field that Vitamic C can't be beat for helping out reverse sun damage and controlling skin pigmentation. If this is the case, I'd love to begin this skin care regimin but the Vitamin C creams are very expensive; upwards of $80 for a .85Fl oz tube. Wonder what other options there are in doing the same thing?
Thanks!

Hi Rachel,

Eat citrus fruit and stop going to Florida to bake in the sun. That healthful tan that is a sign of having been on
a trip to the south can have its' drawbacks.

Skin damage is forever. All you can do is stop doing what
did the damage. Moisturizing creams and with estrogen
can puff up the skin of someone who has lost their youthful suppleness as they age.

after the last month of eating LARGE amounts of watermelon at all 3 meals, I see some improvement in complexion, much less small wrinkles, I think the watermelon allows the body to retain moisture longer and re-hydrates........

Ron

The strange thing about Florida is that all of the tan people are the visitors while the Floridians use sun screen in order to prevent sun burn or tanning.

There's no harm in coming to Florida if one takes care of their skin while in the sun.

Who said anything about anyone going to Florida to soak up rays? My question revolved around Vitamin C and reversing sun damage - this is from years past when I was a child, everyone thought the sun was the best way to get vitamins etc..so our parents let us play in it for years without sunscreen! Now as a young adult, I want to be proactive in helping my skin heal (not even sure if I have sun damage but want to protect my skin) that's all this was about...

Rachel

It's good that you are able to laugh as laughter is the best medicine IMHO.

There are a couple of links for you to check out on skin care with omega oils along with Vitamin C. (if the links work)

You can skim through the archives on skin care while waiting for other answers.

Vitamin C creams - any creams - are usually a hoax and cosmetic -
Here is why. First of all, the Vit C or E or whatever, is only on the top, the most dead - of skin cells. It can not go all the way through your skin or you would have a host of OTHER cream chemicals going into your body. Your skin is MADE to keep things OUT.

Secondly, For Vit C to be effective, it needs other vitamins; and it needs to be internal.

TO get healthier skin, be it from sun or pollution damage, or even burns for that matter; health from th inside out is the best way to do this. The only thing I can tell you is that anything emollient-like (such as E or mineral oil for that matter) will give the APPEARANCE temporarily, of healthier skin.
YOu can't "make" skin healthier or "reverse" your skin condition - you can only make it less noticable. You can make your new skin cells healthier by having a healthier body, thus appearing to "reverse" your skin condition.

Hi Joe,

I'll bet your hair smells terrific too.. :)

Do you think that eating so much watermelon might have
affected your vision for the worse?

Another possibility..
I wonder if there might be some plant estrogen in those watermelons... How are your man-boobs coming along? :)

Hi Rachel...

I knew what you were getting at. I also believe I answered
accurately.
Just start taking precautions now, to take better care of your skin. Watch any irregular shaped moles for any changes
or discolouration. That will be where any serious damage shows up first.

Wait until you read my reply to Joe if you want a giggle.

cold-pressed yellow sesame oil, like you buy in the health food store for about $7 is the best all around skin treatment. Some vitamin c internally will help your skin. Smoking is one of the worst things for your skin and will age you, so, avoid it if you don't already, and that includes not hanging around in closed spaces with heavy smokers.
The sun is very healthy for you-William Campbell Douglass MD holds that it is fluourescent lights that are responsible for skin cancer, not the sun, and some dermatologists are coming around to his opinion.
Stress can have an aging effect , too, so make sure to put relaxation and fun into your health regime.

Hi, Rachel.

Vitamin E cream makes more than 50% of the difference than a vitamin E&C cream will. The next time I am in Walmart, I will look at the creams and see if there is an inexpensive vitamin E&C cream.

I had convinced my wife to use vitamin E cream years ago and she loves it.

So are you saying that Vitamin E is better than C or to use them

Hi Rachel,

Dr Nicholas Perricone swears by the stuff, and he is a respectable (I hope) dermatologist.

I am 38 (almost 39) and noticed my skin was losing it's resiliance in the past year and I did a bit of research on the issue.
Alpha lipoic acid, vitamin C , vitamin E appear to be the heavy hitters in regards to dermatological free radical squashing.

I decided to purchase a moisturizing cream containg vitamine C, alpha-lipoic acid and DMAE made by Derma-e.
I love it and have seen a change in my skin texture.

I plan on purchasing Vitamine C serum (15%) and will apply it at night. I plan to rotate my daily moisturizing product, Derma-e produces several products such as Alpha-lipoic acide and vitamin E, etc...

I think vitamin C works at preventing aging and even repairing collagen, in regards to hyperpigmentation, I think alpha-lipoic acid cream is best and not that expensive.

Hi, Rachel.

Obviously, both together is best but if not available vitamin E is the most important.

I went to Walmart today and could not find ANY creams with vitamin C in them.

I hope this helps lots of people to find some.

Hi Walt,

I purchased my Derma-e cream in a good health food store here in Canada. I payed about $25 for the product and I have been using twice a day since the first of July, and my jar is still 1/2 full. I estimate the cost, tax included, to $7 per month...I spend more than that purchasing coffee in a week.

Vitamin C serums are more expensive, my doc sells a Montreal made product for about $80 for an ounce or two (can't remember). But just a couple of drops are needed. This is the birthay gift I am requesting !

Walmart in Canada has associated itself with an excellent Canadian based vitamin company «Nutravite» who manufactures alpha-lipoic acid capsules and alpha-lipoic acid cream. These products are not expensive. I will give the alpha-lipoic acid cream a try and will keep you posted.

Speaking about Walmart, indipendant studies were conducted in my area in regards to the glucosamine content of several health food and large chain products. The Walmart brand Equate, as well as the Costco brand Kirkland came out with flying colours. Their products contained MORE glucosamine than the 500 mg capsule requirement. Costco came out the least expensive glucosamine product to boot.

There are methods to transport various substances through the skin very deeply. Even throughout the body. But one who specializes in other things wouldn't know about this.

They are often (always?) made with additives that are said to hinder utilization of substances (e.g. magnesium stearate) they are supposed to deliver.
