boils and how to prevent them from recurring

Posted by anonymous on December 12, 2000 at 09:18:18:

I have had four boils over the last nine months. I have never had this problem before. I have had two of them removed by surgery. I use anti-bacterial soaps. I have started taking vitamin C and zinc to boost my immune system. Can you help me? I don't want to ever have another one of these things. The doctor said he didn't know of any way to totally prevent them from occuring. I am not overweight. I exercise regularly. The doctor I went to said some people were just prone to get them. I haven't had this problem until 8 or 9 months ago. I want to know what I can do. There has to be something. Can you make any suggestions?

Hi, I found this by using the search engine. Hope it helps until Walt can answer. You could also try a search and see what other info you can find.

Hi, Janel.

Have you had a 5 hour glucose tolerance test with a 3 day loading of at least 400 grams of carbohydrate a day???

Less than this much evaluation would miss the most common cause of this condition.

If you do not have chemical diabetes, wellness is about the only thing I could recommend to improve your immunity sufficiently to prevent these. See the homepage article.

In the meantime, hot, moist compresses (folded wash cloth with a trace of antibacterial soap on it---Phase III, Safeguard, Dial, P-300, etc.) for 5 minutes every hour--at the first sign of a new boil--will usually reverse the process within a day or so and avoid most of the problem. You need to keep the heat at the point of its being uncomfortable (not enough to burn yourself) to get the job done in the 5 minutes. Every hour is best if you can do it. At least 4 times a day for sufficient results.

By the way, what kind of bath soap do you use?

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi, Anonymous.

Thanks to kmd!

Your best bet is to keep them down as much as possible. Every time one gets away from you it sets up the next one to happen.

SO, toward that end, the immediate application of hot compresses is your best tool. The longer one is present the more likely it is that you will have another. It may take you a year or so to totally resolve this this way but, if you will keep a record on your calendar you will soon see that they are not lasting as long or happening so frequently as time goes on. When you have not had one for 6 months, you can PROBABLY breathe a sigh of relief.

Be sure to check out the diabetes since it is the most common cause.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Dr. Stoll-
I do not have diabetes. My guess is that my immune system was down the first time I got one of these things. I eat right and I have started taking Vitamin C and Zn to boost my immune system. Can you recommend anything else? Also how much vitamin C should I be taking a day? I've read in some cases 1 g. And is this a good way to boost your immune system?
I thank you for your comments. The doctor I saw knew less than I did.
I look forward to having a life without boils. (Especially since this has just started happening.)
Looking forward to hearing any comments you have.

Hi, many people may have diabetes and not know it, so if Walt says this is the most common cause of boils I would get tested just to be sure. As far as the vitamin C and how much to take, it varies individually but you can determine your personal amount by taking some every 30 minutes until you reach "tolerance" (loose stools), and then cut back from that total amount by one dose (because it was that last dose that put you over tolerance). Then you will know the amount you can take every day. However, when you are sick the amount increases. 1 gram is a very low dose for most people, Walt usually recommends at least 4 grams per day as a start...

It took me about 26 grams of Vitamin C to reach tolerance in one day (nmi)

I recently had a physical and all of my levels were fine. I have been tested and I do not have diabetes. I appreciate your response though. I really am pretty sure it was my immune system that was down and I did not have enough antibodies to fight off the infection.

Hi, Anonymous.

The average person in this culture needs at least 4 grams of regular C a day for optimum health (1 gram of ester C).

See Balch & Balch: "Nutritional Healing" for more ways to boost the immune system.

Oh! I thought it was 4 grams of ESTER-C per day!? (nmi)

Hi, kmd.

That is what I take. Basic research says that 5 grams (regular C) a day is what the average American needs for optimal health. That means that the dose may vary from 1 to 10 grams. Since there is still no way to test anyone to see, exactly, where they fit on the bell curve of "normal" for them, I elect to perhaps take more than I need rather than less.

Since one gram of ester C is the equivalent of 4 grams of regular C, you can see where I got this number. Besides, Linus Pauling took 15 grams of regular C a day (which equates to about 4 grams of ester C) until his death in his 90s. Since he was the world's foremost authority on the physiology of vitamin C, I have elected to follow his example.

"You takes your money and you takes your choice!"

Namaste`
