methyl- vs. cyanocobalamine (for B12)

Posted by Well Spouse on August 20, 2002 at 16:34:17:

Was recently searching a peripheral neuropathy webforum to see if there was anything "new." DH has, among other things, "intermittent demyelinating polyneuropathy" of both legs, feet, which results in periodic attacks of pain on the top of a foot and later numbness and immobility from the knee down on one or both feet.

He's been on a WFD and doing SR since November and things are better. (Attacks occur days to weeks apart, instead of several times each day).

Anyway, the other forum mentioned using methylcobalamine as the form of B-12 to supplement with. We use the Metagenics Intensive Care multis, which contain cyanocobalamine. The only reference to methylcobalamine that came up in a search of this BB was in the mercury archives, where it was listed as one possible catalyst to convert amalgam mercury to biologically active in the body! This does not sound good, and obviously would tend to worsen peripheral neuropathy, yet the folks on the other BB are recommending it and saying it has helped them! (DH has no amalgams left, after getting multiple crowns instead, but not by a biological dentist; all that was before we found this BB).

Walt, other knowledgeable folks, any comment on which form of B12 is best, especially for PN?

Thanks, Well.

DH should see continued benefits from what he is doing for years only not so fast per month as up to now.

The kind of B12 has to be avaluated by his personal laboratory (his bodymind)--does it work or not? Perhaps the day will come soon when which form will work for which person will be genetically predictable--but not yet.

Namaste`

I believe the methyl version to be better only in that it is more readily processed by the body. The cyano version contains a tiny amount of cyanide and needs to be converted ultimately to the methyl version before it goes to use.

Thanks, Myelinman.

I still think that genes determine which person will do better with which.
