nosebleed

Posted by georgia on May 24, 2003 at 09:12:04:

Hi Dr. Stoll, A few months ago, my nose started to bleed. You told me that it was probably due to dry, winter air. The doctor said the same, also fragile nose blood vessels. I had it cauterized twice, because after the first time it bled again two weeks later. Then it was fine for a few months. The other day, bleeding again, from the same spot in the right nostril, just up from the part you can see when you look up there. I'm on a homeopathic remedy, and using AYR ointment. Can you tell me the cause of this? Is it something to be concerned about? I can't afford to go back to the dr. He charged me $700 for two visits, and it is not covered by my insurance. Can you help me? Thanks very much. PS, it is not poring out, just seems to bleed on and off when it wants to, even if I'm not blowing.

I had the same problem. Did you try a humidifier? I also got some preservative free nasal saline which seems to keep it at bay.

Hi, Georgia.

Listen to Jennifer.

If this were me, I would just learn to stop the bleeding instantly by simply closing that nostril with my finger and leaning forward. That way there is no mess and will not interrupt your dinner party. If you are too busy to stop it that way, just hold the nostril closed, to avoid the mess, until you can stuff a piece of tissue up there. Pull the tissue back out in about 10 minutes and the problem is done for this time. See the nose archives. If you do not get cauterized any more this, too, should pass.

Cautery tends to stop this kind of bleeding if it is lucky. But, if it is not, it can make it be a permanent problem.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
