Dr. Stoll... All of a sudden my daughter has been having nosebleeds. She's 4 and not really able nor does she want to blow her nose. Sometimes really large dried up get secretions get lodged in her nose. But we usually get her to blow and out they come. Now the other day her nose started bleeding and there was nothing up there just started to bleed took five minutes to stop it. Then 4 hours later during her sleep again it started. this was 2 days ago. Nothing since. ANY reasons why this happened. Have asked around and hear it is common. secondly what's the best way to stop a nosebleed in an infant....thank you

Hi, Mary.
Does she have allergies? Has she been examined while the bleeding was going on?
At this age, a very common cause is a congenital weakness of Kisslebach's Triangle. You could find this in any human anatomy atlas and in any pathology book. If THIS is the cause, write again & I will tell you how to resolve that.
Finally, regardless of the cause, you can most easily stop it by just holding the nostril that is bleeding shut with a finger. It works best if the person is leaning forward a little. This takes about 5 minutes to be sure it is stopped with no release in the meantime.
With a 4 year old, it is pretty easy to teach her to do this at the first sign of the bleed so as to avoid the mess. As a matter of fact, this so reduces the anxiety of a bleed that it helps stop the bleeding faster. She will be glad to avoid the mess and anxiety if you calmly stop it that way several times and show her how to do it.
You don't need to worry about getting the clot out of the nose. It will do that on its own in its own good time.
