Bob, I have the NYstatin powder,What next?

Posted by Cheryl on May 15, 1999 at 13:14:42:

Bob,
As you said the Nystatin was better than the Diflucan
which I am already taking. I'm not sure how to use the
powder. Do I just mix 1/2 tsp. with 4 oz. of water and drink?
I weigh 110 lbs.43yrs. old 5'4''. Is twice a day enough?Let
me know if thats is O.K. Do I take it between meals or right
before meals? Any info on this would be appreciated. The
powder was expensive and not covered by insurance, which doesn't
seem right. They paid for the Diflican. Oh well I just hopes
it works!! Cheryl

Cheryl,

I DON'T think that you should be taking the diflucan.

Sometimes insurance companies will 'reject' paying for the prescription IF you are taking another anti-fungal at the time (in your case you've had the script for diflucan filled). Sometimes the pharmacy that you use might charge an extraordinarily high price since they don't routinely carry nystatin.

I'll let Dr. Stoll comment on the theraputic dose for the nystatin.

Bob,
I am planning to stop taking the diflucan and take the
nystatin powder instead. I think I am on a low dose of Diflucan
100mg. per day. anyway. But I am going to stop taking it but
need to know how to take the Nystatin correctly first. My
doctor gave me the Nystatin but she does not like it and thinks
it is ineffective in most cases. She wants me to take a more
natural approach. Grape seed extract or oil of oregano for a
month then switch to something else for a month ect. What
do you think about using herbs? Cheryl

Cheryl,

I've asked Dr. Stoll to comment on the nystatin and the appropriate dose.

I don't understand your practicioner. First she prescribes an anti-fungal without a not too hot toxicity profile since she claims that it will be more effective -- then she says she prefers a more natural approach with non-prescription anti-fungals (which are MUCH less effective than nystatin and other prescription antifungals).

Just take the nystatin. It has the BEST combination of efficacy and safey -- far beyond that of any 'natural' anti-fungal that I'm aware of.

Oops! Sorry Bob. That was my regular family doctor who
gave me Diflucan. I go to another place for vitamins etc.
(Center of Preventative Health)and they tried to help me
find something other than Diflucan- thats why she suggested
herbs, but she could write a perscription for Nystatin,
even though its not her favorite approach. I just need Walt
I guess for the correct dosage. Thanks Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl.

I, personally, believe that no one should be prescribing Nystatin without giving precise instructions as to how to take it; not that it is dangerous but so that it will be most effective.

I believe that (considering the lack of side effects from Nystatin---MUCH less than aspirin, for example) Nystatin should not BE on "prescription only". At least if it were available over the counter, the instructions would be plainly printed on the lable.

I have found that it takes 750,000 units 4 times a day, at least one hour before or 2 hours after eating or drinking anything except water, to resolve candida most efficiently. That dose can be taken as just the dry powder (which is hard to measure because it packs in the spoon & the potency on the package is based on fluffed material) or prevoiusly mixed in water (considering that once hydrated it loses its potency faster--still good for a couple of months).

Either way, it should be sloshed around in the mouth for a minute or so to start the killing action where the candida tends to hide (in the creases around the gums & teeth).

I hope this helps.

Walt

Thank you Walt. I read that somewhere else on the BB, but I
didn't know what 750, 000 units is equal to? 1/2 tsp? Sorry if its
a stupid question. Cheryl How long do I need to keep this up?

Hi, Cheryl,

My bottle of Nystatin came with approximate equivalents printed on the bottle, and its own measuring spoon. It has a 1/8 measure on one side for 500,000 units and 1/4 on the other for a larger dose. So, I use a slightly heaping 1/8 measure and figure it's about 750,000.

As far as how long - I used it for around 6 months last time around. Then I "fell off the wagon" and was back to square one. I will be tested in a month or so to see how my candida complexes are, but I'm not too worked up about it, cause my diet has been really off lately. I understand some people need to use it for up to a couple of years. It depends on your test results along the way, how well you follow a diet, and your own immune system efficiency.

Good luck!

Hi, Annalora.

In the back of my book there are a number of phone numbers you could call to get this kind of information for your part of the country. If I knew where you were from, I could likely give you the best ones for you to call.

You will be far ahead if you don't have to drag some totally conventional doc into the 21st century. If you feel like contributing to the public, by educating the docs, get well first so you have lots of energy--you are going to need it!
