Hi all. I take "The Total EFA" made by Health from the Sun. It's a blend of the omega 3, 6 and 9. Everytime I take it, I can't help but gag. Before anyone asks, I am almost 100% sure that they aren't rancid. About 6 months ago, I cracked open an Omega 3 pill (since pills commonly contain rancid oil) and I experienced the nasty fishy smell of rancid oil first hand. Plus, I feel the benefits from taking the oils, and I know two other people who take them, who also seem to thrive on them. They have no idea why I find the oil so disgusting. They think it tastes just fine. While I don't find the taste pleasant at all, I really think it's the actual texture of the oil that makes me gag. I pretty much hate the feel of oils in my mouth. I remember once (before I was eating healthy) my mom made me some pasta that was drenched in an olive oil sauce, and it almost made me puke. It tasted good I suppose, but the feel of it in my mouth was just horrifying. I have been being a trooper about this for about 6 months and just taking it. But I tell you, I just haven't gotten used to it. I gag every time. No matter how much I tell myself it's good for me, no matter what I say to myself, I can't help gagging. I try to dump it down deep in my throat, but it still bothers me. Does anyone else have this problem? Are there ANY capsulated EFA's that are ok? Are there any better tasting EFA's? Any suggestions on a new one to try would be appreciated. If I'm going to gag on them anyway, I might as well try a bunch of different ones, even if I gag on those two. If you could tell me the name of your EFA you take and where you usually get it, it would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

Are you opening the capsules? If so, why?
I just swallow them with a little water after a meal. I don't taste or feel them at all. I use the same brand, 1000 mg. capsules around 5 per day...

It's very possible that you're allergic to them. Some people don't know they have a fish allergy because it's mild, but it can affect you that way. If i were you I'd get fish and oil checked.

Hi labrat. It has been my understanding that one should usually get the actual OIL in the essential fatty acids, because the pills are commonly rancid. Usually they are not kept cold, which, as I have understood it, is very important. Your oil is supposed to be cold pressed and kept cold in order for it to be the most potent. Have I been misled on this point?

Hi Reader. Thanks for the info. I'm not sure that I have a fish allergy. Real fish goes down just fine. Are there any other symptoms of a fish allergy? And where would I get these things checked? Like an allergist or something? Is it really expensive? If so, that's just out of the question. (college student=poor) =P

I use Udo's Choice and Coromega(Omega 3).
I think you might like the Coromega........orange cream!

I never heard that the pills were commonly rancid. I suppose they could be, but then so could the bulk packaged oil.
I think that oxygen is more damaging to the oil. These pills are sealed in their containers and I keep them in the fridge after I open them. And of course the oil is sealed in the capsules so it is not repeatedly exposed to oxygen like a jar would be every time you open it...I guess it's a bit of a crapshoot either way?!
I would try the pills and see how they work for you - I use the same brand as you do and I think they have a good product. I think if they were rancid, I would know. And I'd return them. Health from the sun has a website - I might go check it out there and see what I can find out about it.
In the end, if you can't handle the bulk oil, what good will it do you? :-)

Dr. Stoll recommended a brand of EFA's that contains Omega 3, 6, and 9. The Brand is NOW. These EFA's are refrigerated. When I bought mine, they were refrigerated in the store. Also, I take one early in the morning on an empty stomach and then again at night right after dinner. No foul taste, no foul odor. I've been taking them for months now and I can feel a difference. My skin is so clear! My hair is so shiny and believe it or night, my eyesight has improved!! Keep taking them!!

Oooooh, thanks labrat. I would be so happy if I could take EFA's in the capsulated form. It was just my understanding that the pills are commonly rancid. My friend told me this once. And I was convinced of it when I cracked open the EFA's I was taking to find them to be rancid. However, it makes sense that it could have just been that one particular brand.

Rachel: The answer is no, not like one a day. Go to your local health food store and ask for this brand. You should be able walk around and see the refrigerated items. Or make sure you ask for a good EFA.

In answer to your question, the best way I know of finding out if you have an allergy is to go to an advanced chiropractor who knows how to do applied kinesiology testing (muscle testing). The one we go to does it with a sample of your blood in another vial. THat makes the test more sensitive and is at least as reliable as the Elisa test, if not more.
As far as symptoms of a fish allergy, they would be the same for you as symptoms of any allergy. The weakest part of your body will be affected; it doesn't matter whether it's dairy, chemicals, fish, etc. - the symptoms are individual to each person. For one person it may be problems with the digestive system, for another person a runny nose, and for someone with a very severe allergy (not you, fortunately!) it could be a anaphylactic (sp?) reaction.

Since this blend contains flax oil, it is almost certainly at least slightly rancid. Flax oil is highly sensitive to oxygen exposure and can become rancid even when refrigerated. It is more likely the flax that is rancid than the fish oil.
Since this is a blend, if you are allergic, it might not in fact be the fish oil that you are allergic to. Many people cannot make good use of flax oil.
Some people don't handle oils well in general. If you are one of those people, you might consider getting your omega-3 from whole food sources. Omega-3 eggs, grass-fed beef, bison or ostrich. You could try adding omega-3 rich nuts, eg, walnuts.

I would NEVER take this any other way than in capsules. The capsules tend to keep the contents fresh longer anyhow. It is the exposure to oxygen that causes rancidity. There can be no taste that way although some people complain about an after-taste.
If you are one of those, start with taking shark oil instead. After a few months you might start taking some omega 6's to see if they make any difference. It is now known that omega 9s are not essential--the body can make omega 9s from omega 3s.

I tend to prefer the oil in a bottle, since it's kept refrigerated in the store, it's cheaper and also I'll know if/when it's rancid. I don't trust the caps as much since I can't tell what's inside.
At any rate, I can swallow just about anything, if I hold my breath when I do it. It's amazing but when you hold your breath there is almost no sensation of taste. I have to do this with my perfect food. I've been doing it for a while so and it's quite easy now.

it was a fine brand, but I found it much more efficient to take the blend of oils rather than separate ones. If you are only in need of the omegas that flax provides (see, I forget which is which- not a problem with the blend!) then it's a good brand.

I believe the "capsules" ARE sealed gelatin in the Health From the Sun brand. They refer to them as capsules on the bottle, but it looks the same as a vitamin E gel cap...

hah, I used to use that too, labrat. It seemed to work fine, but the taste of it seemed even worse to me.
