Flax Dilemma

That damn PAN company!

I went to the health food store, and guess what, no flax oil caps available, as they have all been confiscated because of their devious work practise, and just when I was doing so well too.

So, now my only option is to take liquid flax seed oil. Ugh! Yuk! How to get that down my throat without throwing up all over the place?! I want to take probably about 1 tablespoon a day.

Any ideas how to make it more palatable, and not turn my stomach? I use to take it in soymilk, but just thinking about that, makes me feel ill.

I can totally help you! I make a smoothy with it. If you can have fruit, add the following in a blender:
1/2 cup soy milk
1/2 cup any kind of fruit juice or water (I use sugar free natural cranberry juice)
1 cup of fruit (I usually use fresh organic berries if I can get them - otherwise I use organic frozen)
1 scoop any kind of protein powder (I use organic soy)
1 Tablespoon flax oil
lots and lots of ice
Taadaa!!!
It is very good. I usually have this for either breakfast or lunch. Once I forgot the flax oil and the smoothy just didn't taste the same.
Try it and post how you liked it.

Guess I should have included my funky diet. Sorry. :(

I cant have ANY fruit (on anti candida diet) or dairy, sugar etc.

No, the flax itself isnt devious. that company here in australia has been fraudulently using all kinds of unauthourized ingredients in its vitaminsupplements, not known if they are safe ingredients or not.
You dont even want to know, Mary. How about a new addition to your vitamins?! Floor sweepings also were included in our supplements! Yummy, hey?! LOL

Here is the link of that company that has messed up all the sale of supplements. Now when I go to my health food store, there is about 10% of vitamins to choose from that has been allowed.

Maria, I buy flax seed, grind small amounts into power and mix with food..I found it dosen't mix well in liquid, so I sprinkle it on cereal, eggs and salads..Steve

I have been taking flax oil in liquid form. Some brands taste better than others. I like Barlean's the best. They also have a website.
I like to put it on popped popcorn. Our local health food store has organic popcorn. Then I sprinkle nutrional yeast on it, and cayenne pepper. It is yummy.

You should try fish oil! ;-) I like the taste of flax oil, but only use it occasionally as I believe the conversion to EPA/DHA is minimal and daily take fish oil supplements. When I do take flax oil, I mix it in skim milk with a little whey protein chocolate powder.

Add it to a vegetable salad, and you won't even notice the taste of the flax oil. Do you eat vegie salads?

I find eating flax seeds to be better than taking the oil. This way you are consuming a whole food. Sprinkle them on your oatmeal, or cereal. They have a nutty taste and I don't burp up oil afterwards. I keep the seeds in the fridge.

I dont know about that R. That flax is pretty foul stuff! Even in the milk I could taste that thick, gluggy flaxie taste. It reminds me of castor oil somewhat.Its much different to say using olive oil over your salad. That is palatable. Flax oil has a totally different taste; less palatable.

Yeah, I use to like the barleans brand whilst living and vacationing within the states. Whenever I go back to the states now, I always look for that brand in the health food store.
Unfortunately, in the Land Down Under, they dont carry that brand. It had a much milder flavour to it. The one I buy has a very strong taste.

It really should have a pleasant taste. Note that flax oil oxidized very readily, polmerizing (becomes thicker) and will smell like paint. If so, do NOT use it as oxidized fats of any kind will do more harm than good. It should always be kept refrigerated, out of light (dark bottle) and tightly capped.

It is best to grind them just before use. If you don't grind or chew them, they will pass right through!

yeah, I know the difference when it goes off. it still has that strong, nutty flavour to the flax, thats not very appealing.

Then maybe you should take it as a sign that it's not good for you. I liked the taste even taken by itself. But then... I like the taste of sugar laden cakes and candies too...

Raw fermented goats fairy can be extremely effective in treating Candida. Check out the book Patient Heal Thyslef by Dr. Jordan Rubin for probably the best program available for treating dybosis as well as many other health problems.

I take it you meant "dairy", GG. :) Well, thing is I did make kefir yoghurt with goats milk, but it didnt seem to do me any good. If anything, it worsened my symptoms. I am still to try the lactofermented vegies. I am keen to try the lactofermented cucumbers in the "Nourishing Traditions" boook, and see how I fare on that.

Why do you think kefir made your symptoms worse? Because of lactose? How do you handle unfermented milk?

If it's lactose, maybe fermenting it longer will help because more lactose will turn into lactic acid. Was your kefir sour?

I bought my flaxseeds in a bulk bin, couldnt find them in the tight sealed packet, and couldnt be bothered hunting through anymore stores. So I ground them today, and wanted to know if I need to refrigerate the seeds?

I also found a great way to consume the ground up flaxseeds. I heated up a cup of milk and added 2 tbspns to the milk and drank it down. It wasnt bad or nasty tasting.

I did the flaxseed oil last night in a cup of cold soymilk. Just a little bit of soymilk, about a quarter cup. I was dreading it, and imagining how yuk it was going to taste, but it wasnt half bad either. I think the trick is to make sure to take it after a meal, so you have something in your stomach.

Hi, Maria.

All seeds are safe. So long as they are still alive, they protect themselves from spoilage. They do not even need to be refrigerated although that does not hurt them.

As soon as they are killed (ground or pressed, etc.) they begin to spoil and so need to be kept in the freezer or refrigerator (depending on how long you plan on keeping them in this state).
