Reaction to Fish Oil

Posted by Bill on September 11, 2003 at 02:59:53:

Hi, i have been having an unusual reaction to omega 3 fish oils. I have been ingesting 3-4 grams of omega 3 fish oils (carlson brand) per day to help with my acne. The last month or so, i have noticed that i bleed a lot more and my skin bruises and scabs frequently and easily. Every time a pimple pops, there is a noticeable increase in the amount of bleeding. In the past, there has been little to no bleeding. I have scabs all over my face now.

I know that the omega 3 fish oil acts as a blood thinner and that might be part of it. Also, i have moderately high iron levels in my blood. This might be contributing to the problem.

Is this excessive bleeding or bruising indicate some underlying condition that i should be concerned about?

Is this only an issue because of my moderately high iron levels?

Should i discontinue the fish oil? I have cut back to about 1 gram per day. I noticed that i do not bleed as much or bruise as easily.

Thanks.

Bill

have you tried bioflavonoids? i believe Walt recommends 200-300mg per day. Reducing the fish oil is probably a good idea.

Hi, Bill.

Check the bruising archives and start the bioflavinoids. You will not be on this dose for more than a few months.

Dr. Stoll and Peter B,

Thanks for your suggestions. However, i tried bioflavinoids for a few weeks with little benefit. I guess i should try it longer just in case.

I think i stopped because i wasn't getting much benefit and i started to think that the problem was not bruising. I guess they are not bruises in the usual sense. Mostly, they are broken pimples that seem to drain blood where there used to be just plain fluid. This blood flow leading to scabbing. Is this still considered bruising?

I don't seem to have any problems with scabbing or the like any place else on my body. Definitely no "bruises" in the usual sense anywhere on my body - only the scabs on face.

Thanks.

Bill

it's probably just the blood-thinning effect from the fish oil. I would try discontinuing the fish oil altogether, see what happens the next few weeks, and maybe start back in measured 500mg doses until you reach 1.5g daily. You might get the benefits without the negative side-effects by maintaining a lower dosage, or even skipping every other day.

Bill,

3000 milligrams of undiluted bioflavinoids twice a day for 3 months. Yes, what you are describing is related to capillary hyperpermeability which is what the bioflavinoids helps.

Dr. Stoll,

Thanks for clarifying the situation for me.

However, now i am confused about the dosage. In the archives and glossary, the dosage is 3 grams every day. Your post suggests double that! 3 grams twice per day. Is this because i didn't seem to benefit from the normal dosage, or is the kind of bleeding/bruising/scabbing an indication of the need for a higher dose?

Thanks. Sorry to be a pain.

Peter B,

Thanks for the help. I think i will stop the fish oil for a few days and then work my way back up as you suggest. Plus i will follow dr stoll's recommendations for the bioflavinoids again. It is possible i did not stick with that long enough before. I should let the capillaries strengthen themselves a little bit before going back to high doses if necessary.

Thanks, Bill.

The manitenance dosage is highly individual. I suggest this large dose as a therapeutic trial to demonstrate to the individual what benefits might accrue. The protocol suggests how to gradually reduce the dosage to determine the eventual maintenance dose.

Anyone can start with a very small dose and gradually build it up. However, that way it could take years for that individual to find out if he needed it and how much.

Hope this helps.

Walt
