Hi everybody,
I just want to share here an experience I had with fish oil.
This year, I have been experiencing a period of light constant depression for several months. I was not understanding what was wrong, but I was not able to enjoy anything. I was feeling like if something could not light up in my brain.
I was taking some fish oil mainly for the inflamatory benefit since several years, but did not use the same brand all the time. During this period of depression, I was reading the book "The omega 3 connection" by Andrew L. Stoll, who uses fish oil to treat depression and other mental problem. I was reading it mainly just by curiosity and for personnal knowledge at the beginning, but considering my lasting state I became more and more interested. About 2 months ago I felt on a passage saying that the DHA contain must always be lower than the EPA contain in the oil because more DHA than EPA could actually cause depression with some person rather than reducing it. I quickly walked to my kitchen and checked my fish oil bottle. The EPA to DHA ratio was actally reversed, something like 180 mg DHA and 120 mg EPA. I was really surprised. The following day I went to the closest pharmacy and bought a very common brand of triple fish oil, this one containing 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, not the contrary. After 2 days, I noticed a difference and about 2 days later, my depression was basically gone.
The faulty fish oil was a salmon oil by Herbal select. I have been using because it seamed to be a good quality oil at a very raisonnable price. I will never use it anymore.
Andrew Stoll wrote in is book that the EPA to DHA ratio must actally be the highest you can find. That's anyway the EPA that has the anti-inflamatory properties. DHA seams to be more usefull for pregnant women, babies and young growing child for the brain development. It seams to be less usefull for adults.
Thanks
Serge

Thanks, Serge.
It really is amazing how such (supposedly) small differences can make such large effects!

I wanted to comment on Fish oil.I just checked out the ratios, EPA to DHA, Serge, and its fine. Thanks for including that, I would never have known to check for that.
I have been taking fish oil (salmon oil) for almost a week and I have noticed definite changes in my mood also.
But I also put this down to getting back into meditation.
Maybe it was the fish oil or maybe both.
My intuition tells me more so the SR doing this.
My stress level is way down, and hardly anything seems to bother me. Things that would set me off before, like stressful events, now dont seem to have the same effect. Even someone at work today just commented to me how I handle things in stride, and dont panic. (not always been this way though~!) I tend to put things more in perspective now.
For instance, we had an emergency at my work on the weekend, and my inner reaction was so very calm, level headed and relaxed, which made it much easier to react in the RIGHT way in the emergency. I noticed this immediately. So different to the way I would normally react.
So, maybe the combination of SR and fish oil are giving me a double whammy of happiness~! :)

I see Carlson's cod liver oil (a popular brand) is almost exactly an equal ratio, but haven't heard this before. You would think the ratios would remain in their natural balance, whatever that is. It's worth checking out, thanks.
