Salmon Spoilage

Posted by Maria Bliss [4.10] on September 08, 2004 at 00:27:18:

Hi,

Can anyone of you tell me if its still okay to use my salmon oil capsules.

I opened the bottle approximately a year ago,and the use by date is not till July 2006, but because its already been open and not kept in the fridge for most of its life, is it still viable to use? or would it be rancid by now?????

TIA

Maria

Hi Maria,
That would probably depend on the temperature you kept them at. The best way to find out is to open one capsule and smell the oil. You will know right away if it's bad, it will smell really fishy but if it smells OK and doesn't leave a fishy taste in your mouth after you take it, than I think it should be OK. I looked on the label of mine and it didn;t say anything about refregerating them so I assume the experation date is good even if you keep them at room temp.
as long as it is cool enough.

Hi Connie,
To a point but it can still overheat and go bad, it should be stored in cool place.

Hi, Maria.

NO capsules are impervious to oxygen seepage. SO, your best bet is what WOW said: Smell and taste are still the most sensitive ways to detect rancidity. If it is rancid your smeller or taster will know!

Thanks, Walt.

I did open one of the capsules and taste it. The odour and taste seemed fine, so I will try it.

I know last time, I tried taking salmon oil, it made my skin breakout. But now that my skin is clear, I am going to try it again, as it seeemed to help in other ways.
