confusion about omega 3's and 6's

Posted by Shannon on August 31, 2000 at 22:25:57:

I read in a book about omega 3's and 6's that the American people should not take omega 6 supplements becuase we get so much of it in our diet. That it actually does more harm than good. 2 months ago I bought borage oil and flax oil, but I stopped taking the borage oil. I also noticed that in my flax oil, there in linoleic acid which is an omega 6. My guess is that people get omega 6 when taking flax. I am still confused about how much we need of what. I have read what you wrote about essential oils but it is confusing and there are some mistakes that I have noticed. I think it says that alpha linoleic acid is an omega 6, but it really is an omega 3. YOu also say to take 5000mgm of flax, but what does mgm stand for? Do you mean mg? I would really appreciate it if anyone has any info about what products are the best and how much I should take of them. Thanks Shannon

Hi, Shannon.

Reference: "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" by Udo Erasmus.

Let us know what you learn. Organic chemistry was my hardest subject in medical school.

MY understanding is that they all work in some sort of synchrony. Presently I am taking NOW's product "Omega 3-6-9".

Perhaps I can learn something from you.

Namaste`

Walt

Walt - Tell me where to get "NOW'S OMEGA 3-6-9" please?? (NMI)

what the optimal ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is. I have read that therapeutic doses should be in the ratio of 1:3, particularly since there is already so much 0-6 in our diets.

Yes, when people take flaxseed they are also getting 0-6, but much les than the 0-3 in general. I'm not sure what the ratio is. I think there's even some 0-6 in fish oil. You're right, alpha linoleic acid (LNA) is an 0-3, wheras a linoleic acid (LA) is an 0-6.

Missing Link has a number of great products for lazy folks like me that don't want to grind their own and can't tolerate taking any oils. It's ground flaxseed with a number of other good ingredients. The human version has 0-3's, 6's, and 9's, the canine version just has 0-3's & 6's. Not listed on their website is a canine veterinary version (I buy at www.lambriarvet.com) that has the highest 0-6:0-3 ratio. My dog and I take the same product -- we alternate between the human product and the veterinary product. I fnd the human (and the regular dog) product at my local health food store.

that alpha linoleic acid is usually spelled alpha linolenic acid, but I've seen it both ways.

Hi, LT.

You have seen it both ways because they are 2 different molecules-----NOT 2 different spellings of the same molecule.

Confusing, isn't it?

Walt

YES! very confusing...question...

Hi, Lisa.

Omega 3 is a technical name for a particular class of molecules as is omega 6 or 9. There are several of each class.

Our bodies tend to handle each class the same way but each one of every class produces subtly different effects. This research is in its infancy.

thanks :-) nm
