EFA Questions, clarification needed if possible!

Posted by KMD on September 03, 2000 at 23:52:12:

Hello,

To try to make sense of everything, I did up a summary for my own personal use of what is in the "Articles on Health" under the topic of "Essential Oils" and this is what I came up with:
************************************************************

OMEGA 6 OILS:
Evening Primrose Oil (most expensive)
Black Current Oil (mid-priced)
Borage Oil (least expensive)

OMEGA 6 ACTIVE INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid)
LA (Linoleic Acid)

OMEGA 3 OILS
Cold Water Fish Oils (least expensive)
Flaxseed Oil (slightly more expensive)

OMEGA 3 ACTIVE INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)
LNA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid) -- not sure if this counts?

STARTING DOSES NEEDED:
For 150lb person: 1500mg Omega 6 and 5000mg Omega 3 per day
For 110lb person: 1100mg Omega 6 and 3670mg Omega 3 per day
*take for 2 months and then cut the dose in half and see if your benefits persist. Continue cutting dose every few months until you notice symptoms starting to return – THEN, go back to the last dose that gave you maximum benefits and continue taking that dose forever.

************************************************************
I keep finding conflicting information about the ratio of O3 to O6 needed. There was a post below regarding this, and Walt replied to reference the book "Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill." I have this book (just got it recently) and I cannot find any clear guidelines about ANYTHING regarding supplementation amounts. It must be in there somewhere, but I can't find it and don't really feel like reading the whole book word for word at this time. Apparently taking too much of one can cause an eventual deficiency in the other? So, any help is appreciated.

In addition, I would like to know if we can count other O3 and O6 ingredients, such as cis-linoleic acid and oleic acid.

I wonder....

how much 0-6 supplementation is needed, if any. Just about everything we eat seems to have 0-6 in it. When I was feeling very "chronic fatigue-y", the doc prescribed several supplements -- B-12, CoQ10, Evening Primrose Oil, and Black Current Oil -- the oils made me feel terrible, but now I take flaxseed with no problem.

let me complicate your question more (although I don't have any answers).....the benefit that flaxseed (the seeds and only some oils) has it that it also contains lignans, which are great tumor fighters and also very healthy for the digestion.

Hi KMD,

According to the tape I got from FMU, it states that you should use a 2-1 ratio; 3 grams of Omega 3 to 1.5 grams of Omega 6.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Joanie!

Does it also say in the FMU tapes the amount of mg of each recommended per day for say, a 110lb. person?

So, Walt's recommendations of 5000mg O3 and 1500mg O6 may be a little "off" as this is more of a 3:1 ratio (not bad) but I don't know how to make the proper adjustments without knowing the mg recommended.

I've read on medline stick to that 3:1 ratio -- I would follow that.

I have also read that we should NOT take O6 supplements becuase we get enough of it in our diet. If we take the o6 supplements than the ratio will be disturbed. I take flaxseed oil, and that's it. I figure I am getting enough o6 already.

Erasmus's recommendations

Erasmus claimes a 3-to-1 ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 is the proper ratio. That is the ratio in his oil blend "Udo's Choice". However, he also states that most diets include a fair amount of Omega 6, albeit of poor quality.

Use your own judgement and don't worry if it's not an exact science. Erasmus's main point was simply to caution against consuming large amounts of flax oil (Omega 3) exclusively for long periods of time.

Thanks Lincoln,

Could you reference a page number for me?

Also, where does one find Udo's Choice?

Thanks!

I wonder how many things we need to stay healthy when our
bodies are functioning right ?? I mean the body regulates
things to keep us in balance. I know that many things can
affect the mechanism and make it malfunction and ageing take
a toll but if one lived a relatively healthy lifestyle
wouldn't the body adjust ??

I guess the talk about the Omega oils made me think of my
rare ice cream cravings and I have Always prefered ice cream
with nuts in it and believe I read that the oils in nuts
have a protective quality against the fats in ice cream.

2 years after I was injured I practically lived on it one
summer and had to use my mothers freezer to hold all i was
buying when it went on sale.. I even called the mfg to see
if I could get the 10 qt containers that the stores use that
my dad used to buy but it was cheaper on sale in 1/2 gals.

I believe in satisfying my cravings and wonder if I will
ever crave those raw egg/kaiser rolls stuffed into a cup of
coffee my grandfather used to eat/drink ?? I told myself IF
I make it to 90 I will.

KMD:

The first (and last!) time I bought Udo's Choice, it was in a dark brown bottle in the refrigerated section of my local health food store, near the egg-beaters. It's also available at Netrition (linked below).

How does it taste?? Netrition says, "Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend has a pleasant, nutty, buttery taste with a hint of sunflower flavor." I found it tasted terrible to me, so I never took much of it and eventually I threw it out, wasting about $10 or 12 dollars, which I thought at the time was a LOT for a bottle of special mixed oil. I see they show the retail price as $12.95, so apparently it went up since I bought mine.

To this day I don't know whether what I bought was rancid, or if it was supposed to taste that way. It was supposed to be kept either refrigerated or even frozen all the time. I wondered if the delivery truck had a breakdown on a hot summer day and it went bad in transit.

Walt has mentioned that if such oil (whether in pills or in a liquid form) is packed/sealed in nitrogen, then there's no air/oxygen in there to react with the oil, so refrigeration ought not be needed till the bottle is opened the first time. I wonder why they did not do that, instead of refrigerating it all thru the supply chain and risking that it be allowed to get warm and get rancid somewhere on the way.

Long answer, but hope it helps!
