To Walt

Hi Walt,

A while ago, I posted a message regarding flax seed oil. I said that I had read an article claiming that it can cause more damage than good and that they prefer to recommend ground flax seeds to the actual oil. Here is why (according to the article); it is a very unstable oil that perishes quickly - specifically in the wrong environment. What concerned me even more than that was that the article claimed that we humans do not convert LA very well, so get an "overload" which can once again cause more harm than good. He recommends fish oil rather than flax.

Now I have been taking flax oil for a couple of months or so (mixing it with yoghurt) and REALLY like the benefits and so do family and friends who have learnt about it from me. I buy Barlean's which comes in a dark bottle and has an expiry date of max 6 months from purchase (as is recommended).

I am stillt taking it and do not want to stop.. however, the reports that ALL flax oil goes bad quickly no matter what type of bottle or processing has been used, and that the non-converted LA can actually CAUSE cancer rather than prevent it has me a little suspicious. I would appreciate your opinion on this.

Hi, Joanna.

Six months, in a dark bottle in the refrigerator, IS "quickly".

Your "results" are an indication that you are getting a worthwhile effect.

It is certainly true that, so long as the oil is still in the living seed, it will not get rancid; probably for years without refrigeration and in the light. SO, in comparison, to the oil, there is a big difference in survival. However, the way you are caring for it pretty much obviates the difference.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply Walt. So you are saying that as long as I keep it well refrigriated and in the right environment, it should keep well and safe?

The point the article (which unfortunately I cannot find now) was making, however, was that no matter how it is processed, once taken out of the seed, the majority of the oil is almost immediately rancid, no matter what processing or storage methods are used. Do you agree with this?

The other, more important thing that I would like your comment on is the conversion of LA in our bodies. The claim of the article was that since most of us do not convert it well, there is a "backlog" which can possibly CAUSE cancer rather than cure it. What do you think?

Hi, Joanna.

In order of your questions:
1. Yes. Remember that it is the oxygen in the air that causes rancidity. That is why is is pretty stable inside the unopened bottle. Once the bottle is opened it must be refrigerated for the same reason. I take mine in sealed gelatin capsules so as to protect them even further from exposure to oxygen.
2. I would really like to see the research that shows that! This is a simple process of rancidity that depends on exposure to oxygen outside the living seed. This is NOT an instantaneous process but a very slow one.
3. I would also like to see the research that shows this. I seriously doubt that it exists. The only relationship between essential fatty acids and cancer is rancidity. AND not getting enough of them.

Namaste`

Walt
