This might sound weird, but it is like I have dandruff all over my body. My skin is a bit scaly, and if I rub it, something like a fine dust comes off. It is also occasionally itchy. I have heard this can be a symptom of a fungal infection, and that the fungus implicated in dandruff (malassezia furfur) is also involved in tinea versicolor. Any ideas/experiences/info??????

we do loose dead skin. I get flaky areas around my nose and
ears that itch from time to tile and sawbing it with
cayenne pepper in salt water stops both the flakes and
itching right away. Dust sounds like something different.

Sounds like it could be just an accumulation of dead skin cells that need help coming off. You can buy expensive sloughing scrubs at the department store cosmetic counters, but I just like to use a pair of exfoliating bath gloves that I found for about $7 at RiteAid drug store. They are knit out of kind of a rough nylon thread. I put them on and soap them up after I've washed all over in the shower and give my skin a once-over. My skin tends to be dry and a bit scaly too, and these really help. They are a little rough for the face, but fine for everywhere else. I apply my lotion while my skin is still damp.
I sure hope you don't have a fungal infection!

now he is much better - he takes the essential fatty acids discussed on this site and uses olive oil soap instead of his old very strong deodorant soap.
I also had trouble with dry skin (not as bad as yours) and was helped a lot when I starte taking the EFAs. It took a couple of months to see the difference, but I am much more comfortable now.
Good luck!

I should have mentioned that I've also started taking EFAs and have been using olive oil soap for about a year, in addition to using the exfoliating gloves once or twice a week.

Hi, Emma.
Mild form of icthiosis and resolvable by the EFA's on the homepage. The loofa is a good additional idea as well.

Dr. Walt,
I have been meaning to address this subject. I DO have X-linked ichthyosis (pretty much present in men only)and I would swear that that EFA's in supplement form actually make my ichthyosis worse (scaly skin, patches, etc.)
What do you think? I have also had Hepatitis B, so my liver is slightly weakend......could this be a problem in taking EFA supplements?
Hope I get a response!

the liver is not synthesizing the oils properly......
here are a couple of thoughts which may or may not be very good...
for the health of the liver, I would do some research about Milk Thistle, or Milk Thistle combined with Dandelion.
In terms of EFA supplements, you may need only omega-3's and not any of the others (no borage, evening primrose, etc.) The latter oils are 0-6's and may make some conditions worse. They should also be taken with addition vitamin E.
I don't really know anything about your condition, but I wonder a general vitamin B supplement with extra biotin would be useful? all conjectures though.....

Thanks, Rodney.
Listen to LT. Good suggestions. Have you used the information in the archives about the liver to enhance liver function?
I have yet to see anyone with this tendency that could not find a combination of essential oils that would feed their genetic need for more of them.
How long did you take the oils the first time. Your "worsening" might have just been a temporary adjustment by your skin to the solution of your problem.

Doctor Stoll: Being so sensitive to skin problems already, I of course stopped taking oils as soon as I got an adverse reaction. I will start EFAs again and maybe just reduce dosage (but keep taking) if flareup occurs. I always take a good milk thistle supp for liver. Is there anything else that is better for liver. I'm actually scared to do liver/gallbladder cleanse (I have gallstones big time) because of all the olive OIL. I may reconsider that now. Thank you so much for your response!
LT: I have taken the B's with extra biotin, because it is supposed to make you perspire more, which is essential for men with ichthyosis. With massive doses I do believe I could tell a difference, although I was on a NO SUGAR diet then as well. I can tell you and I have learned the same things re: dry skin though. Thank you!

Thanks, Rodney.
Silymarin (milk thistle?) alpha lipoic acid and selenium is the conbination that has been researched and proven to be the most effective liver metabolic booster (so far). Combined with caster oil packs and a low dose of essential oils, they even work better. See liver archives.
