Dear Dr. Stoll,
For several years, and worsening with time and during the
winter, I have had thick calluses on my big toes, outer
edges of my feet and heels, as well as thumbs and index
fingers, all of which crack down to raw flesh and are
quite painful. The only 'cure' my doctor has is to file
the dead skin off and nightly coat my feet with vaseline,
wrap them in plastic wrap, put on socks and sleep with
this on. While this works to a degree (the callus always
grows back, and I do wear well fitting shoes), it is a real
bother and I feel slightly ridiculous, and it isn't really
a cure, just a way of dealing with the problem. Do you
have any solutions that would be better/more effective?
All I can do for my hands is put a heavy moisturizer on
them, which is somewhat soothing but doesn't really solve
the problem. Also, I have nail fungus in my big toe, and
am worried that the saran wrap treatment will aggravate
the problem or spread it to other toes. I have just read
about your vinegar cure and will start this soon.
Thank you
Jigme.

Hi, Jigme.
Besides what you are already doing--which will not be necessary much longer--you need to start the EFAs listed in the homepage article AND begin drinking at least 8-8oz glasses of water every 24 hours.
Let us know what you notice in about a month and after about 6 months. You can stop the topical when it is obvious it is no longer needed.

Dr. Stoll is right about the EFA protocol. I started it in September or October last year and this is the first winter in more than I can remember that I have not had cracked and bleeding knuckles and fingertips. I never had the severe cracking on my feet, but over the years I tried every hand cream I could get my hands on to prevent or heal the hand cracking. Just drinking sufficient water did not do it for me either because I've been doing that for years. Wish I'd started the high doses of EFAs a lot sooner. I would have saved lots of money on bandaids and Neosporin, not to mention all the discomfort.

A couple years ago I got a tube of Lanolin. If I put it on my dry, cracked heels before I go to sleep, it absorbs completely. This works so well that it could put the lotion companies out of business, lol.
I heard of someone who used super-glue to tack the edges of split skin together on her hands, but I have never tried that.
Hope you can get some relief soon.

I have been using EFA's for my RA for a couple months and noticed coincidentally that my rough and dry heels were no longer rough and dry - they are almost baby smooth -
