My son was diagnosed with Osgood-schlatter today. He also has cystic fibrosis. My husband had this in high school, gave up sports, spent time resting and casts. He has permanent damage to his knee and recurring pain. I would like to avoid this for my son. The doctor we saw today was not very helpful. He said no one casts anymore. Just rest and ice are necessary. When the disease is gone then they will reshape and remove what is necessary, fluid or extra bone. He doesn't feel the digestive problems associated with cystic fibrosis will effect this. Any suggestions? We want to prevent the pain and the surgery, not wait for it to happen.

Hi, mom
I agree wiht his doc that his CF will not likely influence this condition.
He should avoid any more weight bearng exercises than gently and esential walking necesary for daily activities. He should start at least 3 times a week underwater exercises. Start with supervised training and then do it himself when he is good at it.
The worst thing for him (besides sports) would be walking up and down stairs!
This will be needed until he has stopped getting taller for at least a year.
Let us know how he does.
