Osgood-Schlatters

Hi Walt,

I have read a few of your postings on Osgood-Schlatters and hope you may be able to give me some advice.

I was first diagnosed with OS when I was a teenager and used to play a great deal of football. I am now 25 and have completed half matrathons and continue to be fairly active. I have given up football though as I find this does cause pain.

However, I still have a lump under my knee cap where it seems like the bone has been pushed outwards. Sometimes if I exercise too hard I do have an aching in the knee.

I have just entered a half iron man event and am worried that my knee will not hold out. From your articles I have read that the lump should have disapeared and have heard of people going in for knee operations..

Do I require an operation to get rid of the lump?

I now use a knee support when running - I think this is helping - Does that fit in with the theory.

I would appreciate any advice.

Best Regards

Phil

The lump is normal. It will never go away unless you get surgery (not advised), if it hurts ice it and it should ease the pain. You are not hurting it worse by your activities. The brace is also a very good idea. I have never worn one though and have had Osgood since I was 12 and ice is the best thing for me. Me knee is doing much, much better at the age of 37.

Hi, Phil.

Exactly what did you do to treat this condition while you were still growing?

Walt

Hi Walt,

Thanks for the follow up. I did go and see a specialist who advised me to rest, which I did..otherwise he seemed to think that I would have to put it in plaster - but even this would not cure it..

I was told there was no cure

At the time it was so painful I had to walk up stairs backwards etc.

Regards

Phil

Hi, Phil.

First of all, no one with Osgood Schlatter's should be walking up or down stairs any more than absolutely necessary. I have so even recommended to my patients (including my youngest son--who now at age 40 has never had one bit of trouble since he stopped growing) that they move their bedroom downstairs where there is a bathroom. My son took my recommendaions seriously and I firmly believe that is why he is cured!

It is those patients whose physicians have not taken this seriously, OR those patients who did not take their doc's recommendations seriously, who have problems after the growth is finished.

The only cure is avoiding unnecessary use during the growing years and sometimes that is not enough. Few physicians and fewer patients are so patient.

Walt
