Hi
I am 19 years old and was diagnosed with Osgood Schlatters disease at the age of 11. At that time i played a lot of football, basketball and cycling. I was told to rest my knee for four weeks at a time which ended up nearer 20 weeks. I also visited the orthopedic clinic and was told i could have my leg in a cast for 6 weeks, but the problem would return as soon as the cast was off.
Over the years the problem has come and gone. I mostly had trouble when i was going through a growth spurt then it would settle again.
From around the age i was diagnosed the only excerise i did was walking, and the occassional light sport or swimming. I rested my knee as suggested by my GP.
I have always had the odd pang of pain when going upstairs or straighting my leg or kneeling, but more recently i have had pains in my knee like i used to.
As i live in the Scotland, there doesn't seem to be as much information on Osgood Schlatters Disease as there is in the states and would therefore greatly appreciate your opinions!
I also have a history of Arthritis in the family, and am now getting worried that this can be the problem in my knee.

Hi, Vicki.
This is NOT an indication of impending arthritis!
This IS, however, the consequence of either poor explanation by the doctor (Or, inexcusably, poor understanding by any practicing doctor.) OR poor compliance by the patient and her parents with the explicit instructions needed to stop this condition.
At age 19, it is too late to do anything about preventing what you will live with.
There is major bone surgery that will resolve this. Find a sympathetic orthopedic surgeon who would explain (with pictures) exactly what curative surgery would entail and the extensive physical therapy following it.
There is some info in the OSD archives.
Let us know what you learn.

I had Osgood Sclater's pretty bad when I was younger (early teens); it became worse back then when I was playing sports.
The problem, which was in the knees, faded away over time. Today, I never even think about the problem because it no longer bothers me at all.

You were lucky, Mike.
Managememt of all chronic conditions are statistical. Few OSDs will end up with no symptoms if they do not avoid strenuous sports until development is done. SOME who follow all the rules STILL have trouble after development is done.
