Osgood Schlatters Disease

I have had this disease for a couple of years now and the pain i have had to deal w/ is horrible. Although the condition I delt w/ seems different then others. The muscle never attached right to my knee and after years of sports and running it finnally pulled a part of the bone off. I play travel soccer and go all over the tri state area, after i fist was told of my condidtion i was not allowed to play for a month and a half and was forced to wear a brace that wouldn't allow my knee to bend. I don't know what to do know because its been a two years since i have worn the brace and i just re injured my knee not to the same extent but i feel that wearing a brace will not help and neither will stoping my play of sports. It was sugessted that i have reconstructive knee surgery if i continue to play and i was wondering if that would be the right idea and if i have any other options.
thanx,
Caitey

HI

I am not going to tell you what to do but can relay some info. I have just had an operation (2 weeks) to remove a large bone fragment on my tibia. They cut through the tendon and reomved the bone that was there since i was diagnosed with osgood schlatters when i was 15 (now 32). I was in hospital for 2 days, cructhes for 2 weeks and now after just visiting the doctor he said i should be OK within 6 weeks to resume sport. In the meantime i have to do swimming.

So for soemthing i thought was going to be quite long a drawn out it seems (hopfully) it will be all Ok

If you are still having problems i would suggest you see someone to talk about options. It may not take as long as you think!!

I am 28 now and have had Osgood Schlatter's since I was 11. Is surgery the only option in taking the pain away? How about a knee brace? I would greatly appreciate anyone's input.

I have looked through the archives and found that I had a mismanaged case. From your comments in those archives, you have suggested that surgery is the only option in an adult. I would like to avoid surgery for the time being if possible since I have 2 small children to take care of. What kind of surgery is typically performed for this condition? Thank you for your input.

Sara-
I wore a brace for two months a year ago it seemed to help the injury but you would not be able to do any physical activities. Surgery isn't the only option try talking to a doctor or chiropractor about what may be best for you. Hope this helps.

Hi, Sara.

I agree with Jenny. This is not like knee surgery where the joint has to be opened up.
