I was told i had osgood schlatterss just last saturday and i am devistated. Im 14yo and i love running, i am a competitive athlete who trains 2 times a week and competes 2 times a week to. My coach rang a physio and she said just to do strenghting work and some pool sessions and to lay off the running a bit, i wear a knee brace ocassionally. I dont want to stop running as it is my life, is there any ways which i can still compete but do different training. thanks heaps.

All i can say to u is to listen to the Physios adivce and u will recover, i have got osgood and i wasn't given any of the the adivce you was given and i have had to live with it for about 5 yrs and you don't want that to happen to you otherwise u would have to quit running for a lot longer than a few weeks, swimming is a very good option and one you should take up,
i am soon getting seen to and may have to be in a cast so stick to what advice and keep updating on this to tell me how you get on and i will tell you all about me and my updates
A good thing to do is to look at the Archives they give a lot of help
Kind Regards
Miss Courtnell

i dont feel 'horrible pain' like most of the people on the archives said but its just an occassional twinge, i dont think i have a lump under my knees either? is it a very small case of osgood or should i take it more seriously

Kim,

What if you lost your legs in an auto accident??? Would you be able to give up your running or would that mark the end of your life?

You are only going to have to give up the running until you stop growing (about age 20).

Transfer your competitive spirit to swimming until then. You have a chance, at your age, to prevent this from being a lifetime problem. Be glad!

Hope this helps.

Walt

Kim,

Only when your long bone epiphyses close. Your librarian can help you find a description and pictures.

Kim,

Xray is the only sure way but age charts are available at your public library.
