Osgood-Schlatters

Hi - my 13 year old son and I just got back from the DR. where he was diagnosed with OS. The DR. gave him crutches, recommended ice and ibuprofen and said check in with our main Dr. about physical therapy in a week or so, after the major pain subsides. He did not say anything about the risks of not letting it heal; he even said my son might still be able to play basketball this season! (Bball has just started, which is, I assume, how he hurt himself). (FYI - My son is NOT an athelete. He plays basketball and soccer - not too hard - just a couple of months each year. Other than that, it requires great prodding to get him outside and active.)
What I'm reading is: avoid all weight bearing exercise till he's 20. Are the crutches a good idea? Should his knee be wrapped?
Thanks - Wesley's mom

im a 14yr old girl and i was diagnnosed with osgoods about 1 and a half months ago, i am an athlete, lil aths seniours aths and i boundary ump durin winter so im always running, i have been doin half of wat i normally do for aths which is now 1 maybe 2 trainings a week and only 1 comp a week, my knee doesnt have no where near as much pain as i used to. I swim alot more and i do lots of fitball exercises. My coach and his physio have told me that i should be strengthen the muscles between my ankles and my abs which should help it more wen i run. I wear a knee brace while im doin any sport and i ice it 3 times afta any kinds of sport for 20 mins on 20mins off. Hope this will help u and ur son, i know i still need some more help. And if ur son really likes sport and his pain is not very much i dont think he should stop, just cut down a little.
see ya later

Kim,

Spend some time in the archives about this.

For significant cases, the only solution is to avoid any sports except competitive swimming, even avoiding walking up and down stairs, until growth totally ceases (about age 20). Some will get away with what you have had recommended but they are certainly in the minority.

Let us know what you learn.

Thanks, Kim.

Let us know how you are doing when you are 25-30.

The only thing your friends are getting away with are their immediate symptoms. If that is all you are interested in that sounds like a good plan. Just remember that you have many years to live with this knee. I know that NOW seems to be the most important part of your life.

Walt
