Osgood Schlatters Disease

Hello,

I am 23 years old and my brothers and myself all were diagnosed with osgood schlatters in our pre-teen years. Since we all were serious sports players our doctor's recommendations were to wear knee braces all the time and ice and rest the knee after playing sports.

I have to say, this provided temporary relief but I still have the condition to this day. After having a child I have not been involved in strenous exercise, but now that I want to loose some weight the knee pain is more constant, like in my teenage years.

The thing is, looking back, I would never trade my basketball years even though I am suffering now. I guess my philosiphy is no pain no gain... I imagine mine is no where near the worst case scenario though.

My concern now is mainly for my daughter, as I would love for her to be able to play sports as I did. She is three now and has my flat feet, so I am thinking she may very well have OSD also.

Dr. Stoll - is there any preventive treatment for this disease? Also, I would like to hear more about people who have had the corrective surgery and what they feel about that.

Regards,

Andrea

Thanks, Andrea.

Just as I have been telling everyone for 40 years. Give them the facts and let them decide for themselves.

The only preventive I know of is: AT THE FIRST SIGN OF THE CONDITION start competitive swimming as the only sport. If that is not enough to elimiate symptoms stop going up and down stairs, etc.

You might start by getting your 3 year old interested in swimming at this age and then you will not have to convince her if this starts as a teenager.

Wow,

This is the first time I can ever remember hearing of anyone besides myself having this disease! I had it (as well as my sister) when I was a kid...had to stay out of P.E. for about two years. I've never been athletic; so, it's never given me a problem since. In fact, until now, I almost forgot about ever having it.

Wishing You Well,
Lilo
