OSD

Posted by Lacey on April 22, 2003 at 00:38:24:

I am a 19 year old female, and I was diagnosed with OSD in my left knee when I was 11 years old. At the time, I was told to ice it if it hurt and avoid running, both of which I have been doing since then. A few years later, I went back to my ortho when my knee was bothering me more and was told it was just OSD, and I would out grow it. My senior year of high school when I was 17 I was told that I had a calcium growth left over from OSD, and that it would get better with time if I wore a knee brace. The only sport I competed in during high school was swimming, so I know I got that part right.
I have read through the archieves, but I still have a few questions. I had my other knee x-rayed a few months ago (for an unrelated injury)and it reveled that my epiphysis is closed (I am a few months shy of 20). In the past few months, however, my 'bump' has become more pronouced, and much more painful. I can't kneel at all, walking causes excruitiating pain, and just touching my knee almost causes me to cry (I have cried several times during classes because someone happened to tap or bump my knee). Wearing a brace is out of the question because the brace itself causes even more pain.
I guess my two questions are this:
1)I cannot get an appointment in my hometown (I am at college right now) until the end of May. Should I get this looked at sooner? I am use to being in pain, having dealed with OSD for 8 years, and having swam with a partially dislocated shoulder, but I've never experienced anything like this before.
2) I have read a lot about people who have had surgery to correct this problem. Am I to young to have this done? I had my growth spurt about 5 years ago, and like I mentioned before, my epiphysis does appear to be closed.

Hi, Lacey.

Even some people diagnosed early, like you were, who are given very specific limitationa AND who follow them, might end up like you have. It is just statistics and those given good advice and reasons for following that advice so that they actually do it only have a higher statistical chance of having no problems when the epiphyses close.

IF the epiphyses are actually totally fused, you should not be having pain--especially when you kneel. That tells me that althoiugh the xray shows them closed that they still are not.

THAT means that you can still do some good by avoiding as much stress on the system as possible: not walking up or down stairs, not walking anywhere you can ride, no jumping, no having any fun :o). I am sure you can tell which activities put the most strain on this part. Swimming continues to be the best exercise you can do. I would keep up this kind of restriction for a couple more years.

Since kneeling hurts, you should not do that. ANYTHING that gives you pain you should not do.

If you are still having such severe pain after you are 22 you might see an orthopedist for advice.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
