Hi Doctor, I have read all the posting on OS. My son just got back from a soccer camp yestereday. The therapist at the camp told us to ice three times a day for no more than 15 minutes, otherwise,we'd do the reverse to the knee. I went and bought two braces at Sports Chalet today for my son's knees. The braces I purchased say they are recommened for OS and fit just below the knee. We want to know how often Ryan should wear the brace, how many hours a day, every day, only when playing soccer, etc.... I am thinking I should get him to a orthopedic surgeon next week to see if he's out of sports. Based on what I have read from all your postings.....it doesn't sound like he is going to have a soccer career much longer. How long does it take for the swelling below the knee to go down and does it go down on its own with rest. Can he do any soccer as long as he wears his brace? Any info will be appreciated and please let me know about how often/long he should wear the little black strap braces below his knees. Thank you very much. I have been very concerned about this and I have spent two days researching online about os and I very much appreciate all the info you have posted as it helps when you are not familiar. Looking forward to your response. Thank you very much,
Vicci Wilkins

Use castor oil packs to remove the inflammation. If you are patient and consistent with the castor oil packs it will help. Only his body will be able to tell you if he can continue.

Vicci,
I would be interested in hearing of any benefits one might get from Gen's suggestions. Perhaps there IS another option to stopping sports.
However, I have never seen braces, or anything else help. Even going up and down stairs should be avoided till he is 20. He needs to begin a career in competive swimming if he needs competition.
Once you understand exactly what is happening, I think you will soon understand what needs to be done.
Hope the archives helps you understand it.
