Severe osteoporosis diagnosis!!!

Posted by Jerry on January 08, 2003 at 00:03:34:

Hi everyone,

I am 26 years old and I was diagnosed today with severe osteoporosis. A bone scan showed that I have already lost 33% of my bone mass. The doctor I am seeing is Dr. Eric Braverman of PATH Medical Center in NY. He practices both conventional and alternative methods. So far, he gave me a supplement containing calcium citrate, magnesium oxide, D3, and trace minerals like boron, silica, B6, manganese. He also prescribed a nasal spray called Calcitonin. He says that this drug is just a preventative to help stop my bones from dumping out any more calcium. He is waiting for vitamin D testing and other vitamin/mineral levels to come back to see what may be going on. He thinks that the problem is that I am not utilizing the calcium I am getting. Finally, he recommended weight lifting and rebounding. Next week, I will have the rest of the program when the tests come back. Can knowledgable people comment on this program and let me know if there is more information that I may not be aware of or anything I can do dietary wise to get this under control.

I am practicing SR (certified by Biofeedback for over 1 year), I am also eating no sugar, and I am on a whole foods diet. It dosn't seem to be helping. I don't eat pastuerized dairy products and I don't eat grains without soaking them. I avoid wheat. I have eaten this way for years. I eat according to Nourishing Traditions that HY recommends on this site. I am very scared and I want to make sure that I am doing everything I can do ensure that this does not get worse. Can someone help? Thanks

Jerry

I have seen Dr. Braverman on T.V. I was very impressed with this doctor.
I certainly think you've got one of the best in the country.

I can't give any advice other than to say, "Try not to worry". You're in good hands.

Hi Jerry,

Nancy Appletone wrote a book about osteoporosis called "Healthy Bones: What You Should Know About Osteoporosis". I read it a few years back and thought she gave good practical lifestyle advice.

I've heard that exercise is important in keeping bones strong but you probably need to start doing it cautiously.

Best wishes,

Jerry, have they checked your parathyroids? They control your calcium levels. A friend of mine had the same symptoms as you although she is in her fifties, not twenties. She decided to have them removed although DR. Stoll would probably recommend large doses of magnesium. Why don't you check the archives under osteopenia or parathyroid.

Thanks Sally. No, I haven't had those checked. Do you know how they check that? Is there a special blood test? Thanks for your answer

Yes, there is a special blood test. I just recently had one done. Ask your doc about it.

Hi, Jerry.

Everyone else had some good advice. Dr Braverman may be ahead of hes colleagues but he, according to your note, is still missing some stuff. For example magnesium oxide is totally unabsorbable by nearly everyone. It's only recommendation is that it is cheap (but so is sand). See the osteoposis and the magnesium archives.

Also, the only natural product that has been medically shown to be effective at not only preventing osteoporosis but actually reversing it is hydroxyapatite (see testimonials). If Dr Braverman was really up on the literature, he would know that.

Everything else he is recommending sounds right on. The way to get the most benefits and protect yourself is to not stop learning and combine what you learn WITH what he says.

Let us know how you do. It will take a year or so to see results in reversing osteo accoirding to your tests.

One thing to look into is if your body/blood went
acid. Calcium Moves in the bones normally by the
acid and too much makes your bones dump it.

Jerry, just put parathyroid hormone blood test in any search box and you can find out more about it. I was hoping that the above would be a link but it will be easier if you go back to the search.

studies also show copper to be essential for osteblast formation, so consider adding it to the cocktail.

Thank you Dr. Stoll for answering my post. Dr. Braverman is a very intimidating guy to deal with. When I asked him about the hydroxyapatite, he kind of shrugged it off like "maybe it works, but how well, we don't know" kind of thing. Do you think that I ought to take the calcitonin drug? From what I understand, it has some brutel side-effects. He also wants to put me on Depakote for an anxiety problem that he says I have. He diagnosed this supposed anxiety problem through a test developed at Harvard Medical School called BEAM. I forget what BEAM stands for but it measures brain activity better than any test known according to him. This doctor is supposed to be a holistic doctor but he also uses conventional medicine. He said that natural therapies would be used with me but he didn't think I would be better unless I started the Depakote. I am scared to take it. I have a bad history on medications and I don't do well, especially on anti-anxiety drugs. Do you know anything about depakote? He wants me on 250mg to start. I am very nervous about it and I would rather just do the natural alternative. Thank you in advance.

Thanks Peter. I will ask the doctor about this. He is also a nutritionist (supposedly) so he should know something about it. He claims to be a complimentery doctor but so far, he is pushing nothing but medications and the natural medicines that he did prescribe are not the correct ones (like prescribing me calcium citrate instead of hydroxyapatite). Thanks again.

Neurocranial Restructuring can help your osteoporosis in one major way. NCR puts your body permenantly into a more stablized posture pattern which would increase gravity on your skeleton. Increased gravity often means increased bone density. This is why you should also do weight lifting and rebounding as well. Rebounding increases the force of gravity on your skeleton by 5x. I hope that helps

bone loss at a young age even to the point that
bones can break just walking.

Thanks, Jerry.

In my opinion, if Dr Braverman does not even know about the conventional research showing hydroxyapatite being the only natural substance that reverses osteoporosis, his reputation far exceeds his grasp!

Personally, I would not touch Depakote with a stick. It is one of the few drugs in the PDR that has 5 pages of tiny print describing all the complications, warnings, contraindications, etc. Go to the library and have the reference librarian help you find this data and read it.

Holistic doctors use conventional medicine when it is indicated.

Hope this helps.

Believe me doctor it does help. It's hard to get through to this doctor because he is too pyschologically oriented and he answers questions that you didn't ask instead of answering the ones I want to know. If I ask him if birds fly, he'd say, "a bird dumped on my shoe one time.". I'd repeat the question and again I would get, "birds are a lot like fire-flys". He skates around everything. I even handed him a blooklet of evidence against Depakote the other day. He didn't even look at it. He took it from my hands and threw it on the floor. Then he started telling me that the Depakote would take away the chronic pain I am having and that it would help me put on some weight. When I looked up the medication, a terrible side-effect is that it makes you gain weight. Not muscle but fat. I am really starting to hate this guy. Thanks for your answers doc.

Thanks, Jerry.

In my opinion, the only reason docs like this have a practice is because of the monopoly.

You definitely need a better doc. See the holistic physicians archives to get on the trail of a good one.

You are looking for an Orthomolecular Psychiatrist (call [800] 847-3802). While you are looking, get copies of ALL your medical records to keep in your home.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.
