Hi Dr. Stoll, you recently answered some questions for me on my osteoporosis (I am 26). The doctor I am seeing told me that calcium citrate is better than hydroxyapatite but didn't give any reasons. I would like to know why you choose hydroxyapatite over other forms of calcium for building bone. I tried to look up research on the internet, but I can't find even a single study. I found a book just published called "the best supplements for your health" and they say that research on hydroxyapatite is inconclusive. So, I just don't get it. You seem very sure of yourself on this. Could you explain this? I want to make sure I do the right thing for myself. Thanks
Jerry

Was there a study for Calcium Citrate? I, personally, used Hydroxyapatite to increase my bone density 6% in the femur and 9%in the spine in 6 months. However, I also used a Magnesium supplement and stopped taking dairy products other than yoghurt. During the years I used Calcium citrate, I lost a large amount of bone and developed primary hyperparathyroidism, which had to be surgically corrected. I hope you don't need to go through that !

I don't quite see the connection between synthesizing the product for bioceramic use, and the ingestion of biologically derived hydroxyapatite for uptake by bones, which is what the poster asked about. Perhaps if the poster followed the google search you used, s(he) could find some other information of more direct use.

Hi, Jerry.
Contact Metagenics Midwest at (800) 692-9400 for the references.

Jerry,
This may be of interest to you:
http://www.ftc.gov/os/1997/9710/d9267cmp.htm
It basically states a federal case ag. Metagenics for false and misleading claims. It states that while Metagenics claims there are clinical and scientific studies to back up their claims re: hydroxyapatite, such studies do not exist.
I don't know the outcome here. If anyone does, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks, Talissa.
I have seen the research article or I would not be recommending it so strongly. it took me a year after seeing the article, and the results in my patients, before I began to unabashedly recommend it.
In MY opinion, the feds insist upon a much higher standard for nutritional supplements than for any prescription drug. This unfair policy is to protect the allopathic monopoly that donates so much lobbying money to keep things the way they have been for 100 years.
Read some of the testimonials of people whose osteoporosis reversed significantly (conventional tests) after just a year of hydroxyapatite supplementation. Also, remember, no side effects.
If I had osteoporosis, I know what I would be taking.
Namaste`

Thanks, Jerry.
Remember that the AMA has made a career out of denying any research about supplements publication in "peer reviewed" journals. That way they can say there is no proof. Only in the past few years have they no longer been able to deny ALL of this kind of research.
That means that most conventional searches will not show the publications that even made it to the non-peer reviewed journals.
The joke is that these decisions are made by those who are not, by any stretch of the imagination, "peers" of any practitioners of the modern concepts of medicine. They are ALL the "old guard" whose position is dependent upon the Tolstoy Syndrome!

Hi Dr. Stoll,
It's good to know that you're aware of the FTC suit and are still are 100% behind the product. I completely see your position here. The behind-the-scenes, big money influence has reared its ugly head & it has no regard for what's best for the consumer. I've been taking Calcium Citrate but will try the Hydroxyapatite.
Here's to the good guys,
Talissa
