I had an appt. with my PCP today to discuss the results of my Bone Density test done on 3/20/06. I have been reading the archives here, and info on other websites, and I am 99% convinced that I do not want to take an RX for this. My Dr., of course, was g
iving me all kinds of reasons why I should. I had to bite my tongue, because I have a bit of anger brewing over this "severe" condition as he called it. He was aware that I had anorexia as a teenager, have no history because my parents and grandparents died at early ages, was on tetracycline for 12 years, so therefore was never out in the sun, and had LGS for at least 12 years, so none of the supplements and healthy foods that I was eating were being properly absorbed. And I started having peri-menopause symptoms at age 40. I, of course, didn't put all of this together until I started reading this BB three years ago, and back then I asked if I should have a baseline Bone Density test, and he said "No, not until your period has stopped for a full year."
So here I am at age 55, being told that my bones could fracture at any minute, and I have to decide whether or not to take a RX that I have yet to read anything positive about. I am taking 1500 mg of CA and 800 of Vit D.daily. I am now walking, after finding put that riding a stationary bike was the wrong type of exercise. I have been eating a very healthy diet for 3 years now. I know that I have to stimulate my osteoblasts into producing healthy bones again, and I'm hoping I can do it with the 3LS, and a positive attitude. I will post the numbers from the test; I also don't want to jeopardize my health by not taking the Fosamax if a second opinion says so. I have 12 grandchildren that I want to keep having " Gram-ma adventures" with for a very long time.
This ended up longer than I had planned..... thanks in advance for any input. Janice

I understand your concern - I always wondered about Fosamax and the fact that you can't lie down for 30 minutes after taking it.Sounds like you have a good plan -- don't forget to include calcium rich foods.

JC hi - are you getting enough magnisium to offset all the calcium??
I heard a talk program today, stating that we get Osteoporosis from drinking flouide in our water as we matured! I never drank "good" water at a young age.....!!
this is a good place to learn more about your concerns.........good luck

I know several people that swear Fosmax caused severe gastrointestinal problems for them. They all say they would never take it again and warn everyone they know. That being said, my sister knows all of this and just started taking it anyway, because she is so afraid of ending up like our mother. As for me I'm going the natural route.

Hi Wondering,
Recently it was published that fosamax could be taken weekly instead of daily with similar effectiveness.
If there is a fear of the gastric problems and the need to rebuild bone is crucial, a bisphosphonate such as pamindronate (alendronate) can be taken intravenously to do as much in a few months as taking fosamax for a year or two.
Here is a link which explains....

first, thanks to those who responded. For Dr. Stoll...I meant to ask about Hydroxyapatite". I was reading about it in the archives, most of which are 3+ years old. Do you still believe in its' effectiveness as strongly as you did back then ? If so, where can it be purchased ? T.Y. JC

Pdr family guide states common side effects are: Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea. Less common side effects: acid backup, difficulty swallowing, esophageal ulcers, headache and vomiting.Rare side effects: changes in taste, inflammation of the stomach.None of these sound good to me, I would take the natural route too.PDR also states not to take fosamax if blood calcium is low,not recommended for women with kidney problems or on HRT.MD must know if you have any digestive problems as Fosamax may cause esophageal inflammation and bleeding-"and in rare cases blockage".Also states not to chew or suck on the tablets as it can cause mouth sores.Pretty caustic stuff!

Thanks Ron,
I hope I never need this drug because I'd be too afraid to take it!

Thanks, JC.
In my opinion, your doc (the one who does not understand what a "baseline study" is) really should be hanging paper for a living and not giving people erroneous advice.
I am not familiar with the Lunar Prodigy normals. Can you pass them along with your results again?

JC,
My opinion of hydroxyapatite with boron has only strengthened over the years. My now all healthfood stores will have it on the shelf. I still think the best product is by Ethical Nutrients. This, along with underwater exercises at least 3 times a week, will make significant differences in any studies within 2 years.
Let us know how you do.

Thank you JC for posting this and Dr Stoll for your response - the sort of questions I need to work out an answer to, as I too have osteoporosis, which I've not faced up to beyond taking HRT as an interim measure. I think that fairly soon something like Fosomax will be pushed at me by my GP who in many ways I respect and I will need to decide what route to go down.
There seems to be so much contradictory information in this area - inevitably, I guess, in an area which is still relatively badly understood - but it can produce paralysis!
I am so grateful for this site and the generous wisdom with which you respond, Dr Stoll - being straight with people, empowering them and your openness
to whatever works. Thank you.

Thanks, Rib.
Just be sure, if you ever seriously consider taking Fosamax, that you carefully read what it says in the PDR first. Hydroxyapatite has no negative side effects and is more effective and less expensive (by far) than the Fosamax.

I just looked up their website(www.ethicalnutrients.com)--you can order directly or plug in your zipcode to find the nearest store.
