To k.--Regarding your Mom's Cal-Apatite

Posted by Ellen [3088.3349] on October 19, 2008 at 11:59:53:

Does your Mom take additional calcium, other than what's in the Cal-Apatite? The bottle does show that the Calcium is 626 mg, which seems low. That's of concern to me.

Hi Ellen,

Beautiful day, huh?

Anyway, remember, my mother had a reaction to the cal-apatite and became very weak and wobbly, so she stopped. I was so disappointed, because it took me a few years to finally get her to take it. But her strength is important and she almost fell over her legs were so weak. So she takes Citrical. I, on the other hand had no problems with cal-apatite at all.

As for the amount of mg's in cal-apatite, didn't you just run those numbers by Doc Walt the other day and he said it was about right? You could always call Metagenics and talk to a rep, they might be able to justify the percentage.

Don't forget to get 20 minutes of sunlight to help the calcium absorb. I heard on the radio just this morning that is so important, so I just finished 20 minutes on the patio. Not too hard to do. :)

Hi Ellen,

Remember I told you that my mother couldn't take the cal-apatite, that it made her very weak and wobbly, and that she takes citrical. I am very disappointed about that because Doc Walt swears by it, but she was nearly toppling over and that was too scary.

Now didn't you just run those percentages in cal-apatite by Doc Walt the other day and he approved? You could always call Metagenics too and talk to a rep about why they settled on that amount. Also, you can supplement with dark leafy greens.

Hey, I'm an old broad. That's right, I forgot. Yes, I did run it by Dr Walt. I'm just a little apprehensive, with my Osteo being so severe in my spine. And I can't do another bone scan for 2 years. I thought I read that you can take up to 6 tablets, but I may have that confused with another drug. I get rummy from all this stuff! I'm tempted to try the New Spirit Naturals that tuffbonz had such huge success with, after my first 3 months of Cal Apatite.

Yes, it is a beautiful day. A little chilly here, though. Coming into the Shores about 2:30, it was 61 degrees. It is a little colder, living on the water. My Dr said 10 minutes of sun per day. But I do drink milk and I'm getting vitamin D in that.

Dr Walt initially recommended 3 1000 mg. But they don't come in that denomination. The calcium is 626 mg and that is with 3 pills and as a post-menopausal woman, I should be having 1500 mg/day. So each pill is more like 209 mg of calcium, hardly the 3 1000 mg that Dr Walt suggested. That's what is troubling me.

Ellen, do you have your D3 covered?? I just read the other day it's more important for bone development than calcium. Maybe you already discussed this in earlier threads. If you don't know your vit D blood levels, you can easily have them tested. I did, & found I was quite deficient. It's taken about 6 months to get into normal range. Now I need to get another bone scan, to see if the D has impacted my osteopenia. Will post results.

Thanks, Mary. I just read about that in today's paper. So ironic for me. Here, I've avoided the sun, my father and sister both died of melanoma. I've sent my Dr an email regarding a possible thyroid connection. I was told that thyroid affects osteoporosis. I'm always complaining of how cold I am, too. Perhaps this is all related.

This is a really great bulletin board. I'm so lucky to learn from all of you. Thanks again!

Ellen,

It is the ratio of trace minerals and amino acid catalysts in hydroxy apatite with boron that makes it so effective for reversing osteoporosis--not the relative amount of calcium in the product!

Thanks, Ellen.

MY cal apatite comes in 1000 milligram tablets. When talking about cal apatite, I am not talking about elemental calcium. The dosage is perfectly balanced the way it comes.

Hope this helps.

Hey old broad, that's ok! I'm getting to the board late so I saw Doc Walt has already posted to you twice in this thread about the calcium levels. I hope it helps ease your mind.

I just heard about the D levels being even more important than the calcium, after the bones have formed, and have just finished taking my 25 minutes in the sun. I think I heard somewhere that sunshine is the best way to obtain D, but I understand your reluctance, since melanoma runs in your family. My father had a very stubborn case of basil cell carcinoma, and had to get it removed or checked every few months for years. His dermatologist told me that I have exactly the same skin, and should stay out of the sun, but I just sit out for 20 minutes and get some sun on my legs. I doubt whether that will kill me.

Yeah, a little cooler yesterday, but it will yoyo all week by 10 degrees. Still, we have the best weather in the country. :) My brother used to live in a beautiful house right on the water in F.C., but complained that it was too cold, cloudy, and windy, so he moved to the city. Yeah, right. ???

Well, Dr Walt's post doesn't ease my mind. He's taking a total of 3000 mg and my calcium with the 3 pills total 626 mg. I've not had a chance to respond to his, but I will. I just want to make sure that I'm taking sufficient, since my spine is severe.

Basal cell carcinoma is "skin cancer" but nothing like melanoma. It's aggressive and lethal. I will go in the sun now, it's just that I've been programmed to avoid it.

I just get an email from my Dr at Kaiser and she's order tsh and vitamin d tests.

Maybe you can take EXACTLY what Doc Walt is taking. That's a shame that your spine is severe, the spine is so crucial to good health and strength. Can you do yoga? It's supposed to be very strengthening for the spine. I took it for many years at the S.C. rec center.

Yeah, I know, melanoma is a real b@tch.

That's good news about the tests, and keep up the good work!

I think the Jazzercise works. It's weight bearing and now that I know that I have it, I know not to twist or touch my toes.

As far as the dosage, perhaps it can be remedied by taking additional? I don't know, but I sure don't want to have another bone density test in 2 years and find my condition the same or worse (because I'm not taking enough calcium).

Dr Walt--The difference between your dosage and my dosage is troubling me. Do you think that I should take more tablets than just 3? The label states take 3 or whatever your practioner suggests. (Or words to that effect.) Someone else suggested having my thyroid checked and vitamin d levels checked, so I'm going to give blood tomorrow. A possible thyroid issue is intriguing, as I'm usually a bit colder than most people. And someone indicated that thyroid issues could adversely affect bone density--is that true? Thanks as always, Dr Walt.

That's good that the jazzercise will help. And it's fun too, isn't it?

I just re-read Doc Walt's post at the top of this thread, and it makes good sense to me. It's not so much the amount of calcium, as it is the ratio of trace minerals to amino acid catalysts.

At this point I guess it's a question of trust, and I do trust Doc Walt very much, particularly on this subject. He has been recommending this product for years, and I'm sure he does so in the best interest of all the people who come to him for answers.

With that said, I do understand your concern, especially since you have a severe case involving your spine. I think the best thing you can do for yourself, is to find a way to resolve your concern, because it's only draining your immune system, and that can't be good.

Tonight at 8:00 pm there is supposed to be a fabulous program on channel 9 (pbs) about quantum mechanics. I don't know if you're interested, but I find it's always grounding and puts things in perspective to expose oneself to subjects of that nature. Especially at a time when you are this worried.

Hang in there1

Ellen,

Of course any individual may have a need for individual dosage but that must be determined by the "doc on the spot". The dosage I am using is an average dosage. It is pretty hard to overdose on hydroxyapatite with boron since it is so well balanced with the rest of the bone forming trace minerals.

My Doc on the spot says Fosamax, so you're the only Dr encouraging me to use Cal Apatite. Should I take peraps 4 a day, instead of the 3? I've been having gas lately and suspect that it's the CA... And possibly a little diarrhea. If I can deal with that, is it still ok? Is the stuff going right through me, rather than staying in my body? Thanks, Dr Walt.

Thanks, Ellen.

I would respectfully advise you that any doc who recommends Fosamax, as the primary approach to osteoporosis, is a nutritionally ignorant doc and I would find a better one. Remember the adage: "You can't fool mother nature." Well this is a prime example of that truth.
