Hydroxyapatite for Osteoporosis

Posted by Raisa to Allison on October 22, 2001 at 09:53:19:

Hi, Allison - The product is called "Cal-Apatite". Below is a link which will tell you about it and where to purchase it. Someone else may be able to tell you where you can get a better price. Raisa

Thanks,

Hi, Allison - I think I answered that but under your original post. But, here is what I do: Go to "Post Message" at the top of the Bulletin Board page. Click on that and then post your message, putting 'LGS', or whatever, either in the subject or in the text -- unless, of course, you are answering a post about that subject! Hope this helps! Raisa

Hi again, Allison - Would you please tell me how you found out that you have Osteoporosis? Have you had a bone density test? I have Osteoporosis, but my doctor said that just losing height doesn't necessarily mean a person has Osteoporosis (for what that's worth! - I don't know what other reasons would be). But I do have friends who have lost height (women over 55) who say that their bone density is fine. Are your shoulders stooped? Mine aren't (yet), but I do have several crushed vertebra which show up on the bone density tests. Thanks. Raisa

Raisa, I ordered "Bonebuilder" from Ethical Nutrients when it was on sale for around 17 dollars. I think it has 220 pills/bottle. It was in the Vitamin Shoppe Catalogue.

Hi, Sally - thanks. Is Bone Builder the same, essentially, as Cal-Apatite? I hope Allison reads this. Actually, I haven't tried Hydroxyapatite yet because I have been taking Fosamax and am afraid to stop, since it says that if you stop taking it, bones will weaken again. The only help that Fosamax has given me is with my spine - but at least the bone density in my hip has not worsened. I do not trust Fosamax at all, and soon I will stop taking it and switch to Cal-Apatite. Have you taken the "Bone Builder" very long? Are you trying to prevent Osteoporosis or do you have it? Thanks again. Raisa

Hi Raisa, I thought Dr. Stoll used this product but anyway, Dr. Atkins mentioned it on "Larry King Live" and said it was quite effective in their studies (hydroxyapatite for osteoporosis). Why don't you ask Dr. Stoll if you can take both the Faso and the Hydroxy at the same time. Fasomax just seals the bone so you don't lose as much, I don't think it builds bone at all. I have been taking it for about 6 months so I will let you know if, and when, I know about its effectiveness. Go to the Vitamin Shoppe website and Metagenics Brand and Ethical Nutrients to see exact ingredients. Product # is EN 1009

Thanks, Raisa.

I would not take Fosamax on a bet.

I will bet, however, that it is off the market in about 10 years.

Hope I am wrong.

Walt

Hi again - Yes, Dr. Stoll recommends using Cal-Apatite. I was just confirming with you that "Bone buiders" was also hydroxyapatite. Walt, I would appreciate hearing your opinion as to whether taking both the Fosamax and hydroxyapatite would be recommended. I know you don't recommend using Fosamax in the first place, but since I started using it three years ago before finding this site, I am afraid to just stop. Would you recommend just stopping now and switching to the Cal-Apatite? Thanks.

Hi, Walt - I wrote my post to Sally before I saw yours. I would still appreciate knowing what you think about just stopping Fosamax and switching to Cal-Apatite. Thanks.

Thanks, Raisa.

I know of no bad things that can happen from stopping Fosamax cold turkey. Since I have never used it, however, you might just carefully read your package insert to see if I am right.

Let us know what you learn.

Hi Walt - I have read the package insert over and over many times. All they will say is that if a person stops taking it all the "good" (if any) it has done will end. As you have said many times, and I agree, we are guinea pigs with these new drugs and only time will tell, I guess.
The drug seems to have been successful in treating Paget's disease of the bone, or has it? But, I was also wondering whether it would be safe to take the Cal-apatite along with the Fosamax, and then stop the Fosamax if I like the results? Raisa

Hi, Raisa.

IF the Fosamax actually did any good, any good it had done will still be there when it is stopped. What they mean is that the any beneficial effect will not continue to progress.

I know of no conflict between Fosamax and hydroxyapatite. The reason why I would stop the Fosamax is that this is another drug that has a high propensity for the "whoops factor" so many drugs are showing up with.

Only time will tell.

Walt
